5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ
I truly loved this book. Staying up until midnight some nights reading, it kept me wanting to read on to the next chapter. After reading this book I have a whole new perspective on how animals are treated. It never occurred to me that animals take that big a blow during natural disasters. I sympathized with the mistreated animals, and laughed at the comical creatures...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of its genre, May 24 2000
By
This review is from: Out of Harm's Way (Paperback)
I'm a journalist reviewing about 5 books of this genre for an article and I do think this is the best one simply because of the strength of the authors' storytelling and the power of the actual facts she sets forth. Lots of personal insights, intimate detail, and remarkable rescues. This isn't a book that someone just wrote overnight and sold with a pretty cover and large font -- this is really a long, well thought-out, dramatically paced and engaging read. I couldn't put it down. If you have pets of your own, you'll find yourself getting all misty eyed when you read of Crisp's determination to run into forest fires just to rescue rabbits or kittens. The history she tells of her emergency rescue crew is also a remarkable one. What an amazing group of people. This book really shows you the best and worst that animals bring out in humans, on both the individual and communal level. Best of all, she doesn't get preachy or political about animal rights; she just wants you to take care of them as well as you can. She even includes a self-help/first aid guide at the back of the book for pet owners in case of a natural disaster.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable!, Mar 30 2000
This review is from: Out of Harm's Way (Paperback)
Terri Crisp will carry one through every emotion imaginable as she tells of her many courageous rescues of animals during both nature and man-made disasters. There are numerous inspiring stories, but the most heartbreaking and disturbing are the ones which tell of owners leaving their pets behind - treating their pets as disposable items.

Ms. Crisp explains the tragic consequences of not being prepared for a disaster throughout the entire book. She also includes invaluable pet disaster kits and other information in order to prepare for a disaster.

This is one book that I could not put down until the last page was read. It's one that will be read and re-read.

If you care about companion animals, please please read. The content made me more aware of Animal needs during a disaster, and has inspired me to take a UAN/EARS training course that certifies a volunteer to help in the rescue effort of animals when disaster strikes (tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, etc.). This book reads like fiction and I could not put it down. I am buying several to give as gifts, as this book moved me beyond belief. I hope Ms. Crisp writes more books on Animal Rescue in natural disasters, her personal experiences, and how crucial volunteers are. Ms. Crisp focuses on the positive side of Emergency Animal Rescue for the animals that were left behind to fend for themselves. Great reading and extremely uplifting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Out of Harms Way, Feb 11 2000

Being a teacher, I edit and review a lot. I found this to be one of the best 'content' stories I've ever read. It was very descriptive and introduced you to the world of saving our furry, fluffy and sometimes feathered friends. This story reminded me of growing up on our farm and brought me back to my many adventures as a child, working with animals. I laughed and cried in every chapter. I simply couldn't wait to go to bed everynight so I could read more. It was like a Daniel Steele, only without the romance. It was so good, it's convinced me to train this summer to be a volunteer in Minnesota. I'm very anxious and I'm so thankful for all she (and the other volunteers) have done for the animals that I love so much. I recommend it to everyone, reading it should be a prerequisite for anyone living in a potentially disasterous area. Bravo!
