This review is from: Strong on Defense: Survival Rules to Protect You and Your Family from Crime (Hardcover)
I teach civilian Self-Defense. I have already purchased 6 copies of this book and gave them to fellow instructors and students. This book is a no nonsense how-to-guide on surviving a violent attack, heaven forbid you have to. Equally as important he gives simple techniques on how to avoid becoming a victum of a violent attack. His techniques are simple and instinctual within all of us. We have, for too long, been taught to listen to our assailants, do as they say and we won't get hurt. That is wrong headed and wrong advise. Mr. Strong with decades of police experience tells why and has scenario after scenario of survivors stories. This should be required reading material for all, especially women.

This review is from: Strong on Defense: Survival Rules to Protect You and Your Family from Crime (Hardcover)
This book is not about preventing crime, it's surviving a violent crime. Strong does not concentrate on how to avoid being a victim, instead he tells how to survive the confrontation when you became one. This makes sense, since he states that violence is becaming more and more random and you can became a victim, no matter what you do. There is also some advise on avoiding crime, but the emphasis is not on that issue. The book is filled with stories from real life. The stories - no matter how grim - are interesting to read, and the actions of the victims is analyzed after the story. You learn, what the victims did wrong, and what they did right. This makes the book interesting to read, and the "hard text" is also easy to read. The principles Strong advocates are very simple and easy to remember, even during a crisis. On some occasions his advise seems somewhat farfetched, but on the other hand, it's better be prepared before something bad happens. At the end of the book, Strong gives his formula of making a safer future. His formula is simply putting the criminals behind bars, and keeping them there. This is a very important book; everyone should read it. It's really sad that we need books like this, but it's a realistic possibility that you can become a victim. If that happens, this book may hold the answers to your survival.

Will you spend 11 bucks if it could save your life?,

Then buy this book today, right now as a matter of fact. I teach self defense to women and this book is required reading. Everybody thinks protecting yourself is about punching or kicking, but that's only a small part. Mindeset is everything, and having workable plans is everything. This book is full of practical advice, and startling examples. Buy it, read it , re-read it. I also highly recommend Gavin DeBecker's "the Gift of Fear".

An astonishing book,
By Strong shows--correctly--that most attacks are carried out by recidivists whose one goal (apart from the obvious) is to get away with their crime as cleanly as possible after committing it. This usually involves getting rid of witnesses: yep, you! In so doing, Strong has dispelled a strong myth (usually espoused by the mainstream media and some police persons) concerning attacks and self-defense. Passivity will get you killed, he says. Another myth dispelled early on is thinking that training in a martial arts programme will usually suffice to defend oneself. He correctly points out that most martial arts programmes require many years of dedicated study. Time that most people do not have. He goes on to outline the steps he recommends anyone faced with armed (or unarmed) attack should take to safeguard themselves. His system is simplicity itself and does not require intense reflection, the best sort. Illustrative stories of ordinary people who were faced with attack and some of the things they did right or wrong pepper the book and is used very effectively to show his system in action. I heartily recommend this book and urge everyone to study it from cover to cover. A most important work.

Serious, serious stuff,
By Nathaniel Firethorn (Exit 8A, New Jersey) - See all my reviews Strong's goal is to get your mindset right for surviving. He is in your face about doing this, using real-life examples to teach and mincing no words. It's by no means a light or pleasant read, but it is a necessary one. Not everyone is ready for Strong's book, but until you are ready for it, you are not ready to survive.
