5.0 out of 5 stars Saved by Soup, April 29 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Saved By Soup (Hardcover)
This is a lovely little book. Full of recipes that are easy to make and taste fabulous. We try a new soup from this book at least once a month, and we make Pasta e Fagioli almost every week. The only down side, for those on specialized diets, is that the nutritional information is limited to calories and grams of fat only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great soup book, July 11 2009
This review is from: Saved By Soup (Hardcover)
I read reviews before I purchase books so I thought I'd add my praise now that I have had this book for some time.

I have made a ton of soups from the book and they are all very good. What I love about the recipes is that the ingredient list is usually not that daunting. The recipes are based on high-quality ingredients cooked to make a fabulously tasty and healthy soup. Simplicity at its best.

For what it is worth, I recommend the following recipes: Noelle's Soup of Winter Squash and Roasted Red Peppers (to die for!), Creamy Carrot Soup (sinfully creamy without the fat due to rice) and Roasted Beet Borscht (not authentic but easy and tasty).

5.0 out of 5 stars Best cookbook purchase I've ever made, Jan 22 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Saved By Soup (Hardcover)
This is by far my favorite cookbook. I am actually not much of a cook (though I have lots of cookbooks-go figure!) but I use this one all the time. I've made about a dozen of the soups and I've loved them all. The recipes are easy, delicious and simple to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars YUMMMM, Jan 18 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Saved By Soup (Hardcover)
I am a horrible and lazy cook. Plus I'm on a diet and I'm a vegetarian. So cooking is a bit of a chore for me. I've only made one soup from this book so far (creamy carrot) but it was super easy and extremely delicious. The most difficult part was chopping up the carrots! The entire soup only had four ingredients plus salt, pepper and a splash of olive oil. And let me tell you, it tastes outrageously rich and creamy! I've already picked out two more recipes I plan to make this week. They both sound very easy and delectable. My big pet peeve about other cookbooks is that you have to drive all over town to buy obscure ingredients you'll never use again. Not so with Saved by Soup. All of the ingredients are easy to find, and also, there aren't that many ingredients in each recipe, which is a godsend for singletons like myself. I highly recommend this book!!! The only thing that would improve it would be more photos. I'm a very visual person and prefer to have a photo of every recipe.

I've tried at least 10 of these recipes. Every time I make a new soup my husband says, "This is the best soup I've ever had." "Saved by Soup" is one of my very favorite cookbooks; I bet I use it at least once a week -- winter, spring, summer, fall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent so far!, Nov 2 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Saved By Soup (Hardcover)
I bought this book based on the recommendations I read here, and I have not been disappointed. I made the Lemony Chickpea and Escarole soup the other night, and it was very, very good. It was simple, quick, required few ingredients, and tasted great. There are lots of what appear to be the same type of recipes in this book. I look forward to using this book frequently, especially for quick and warming lunches.

4.0 out of 5 stars The New and the Old, Feb 21 2003
This review is from: Saved By Soup (Hardcover)
Some of these recipes were old favorites and some were very new, but what they all have in common the low fat content which we all appreciate. The author does not sacrifice taste when she trades in the higher fat foods for lower fat ones!

Some of the recipes are ones I enjoyed reading but would never try because of the loooong list of ingredients. I find myself just skipping over recipes that have 20+ ingredients. It's just too much.

Looking out at 2 feet of snow, I am planning on making the Chick Pea and Tomato Soup this afternoon. Sounds yummy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, health and great flavor too!, Dec 28 2000

This is a must for your kitchen cookbook library. "Saved by Soup" should not be confused as a seasonal cookbook. I love cooking soup during the blustery winter days, and from fall to spring this compact cookbook seldom goes back into the rack. The summer section in this book is also very good. You must try Judith Barrett's 'Best Gazpacho' and 'Chilled Corn Vichyssoise' summer recipes.

My girlfriend is delighted over this cookbook, and she does not often cook. She jumped in and made some very good soups -- try 'Real Gumbo with Okra and Chicken' . Together, we have yet to find a recipe that is not very pleasing. Many, like the 'Ligurian Minestrone', are excellent (this is the best Minestrone we have eaten).

Now, even though these recipes are easy to follow, and the great color photographs make them more enticing, they are not the "20 minute" type. Many of them call for fresh herbs and fresh ingredients, but don't despair, Barrett will reward you with outstanding taste almost every time and I guarantee that your guests will clamor for more. OK, with that having been said, don't forget that most of her recipes are low fat -- less than 3 grams of fat per serving. Wow, health and great flavor too! Highly Recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars It works! I gave it to all my friends., Mar 31 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Saved By Soup (Hardcover)
I bought this for easy & tasty soup recipes, which it delivers in ladles. An added bonus was an effortless 10-pound weight loss. There's enough variety for any palate and a lot of the soups freeze well. I use this at least three times a week, even after owning it five months.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saved by Soup, Mar 9 2000
This review is from: Saved By Soup (Hardcover)
I have never felt more of a need to comment on any book. I have over 800 cookbooks and this is a daily user. I have made over half of the soups and the book is simply amazing. ALL of the recipes rate 5 stars. A MUST BOOK in all homes.
