5.0 out of 5 stars A love story between parents and children
Vera B. Williams' "More More More Said the Baby" is a modern-day classic. Given as a baby gift to our now-much-older son, this instantly became a family favorite. It fairly radiates joy, both via the simple text--which centers on the deliciousness of hugging, kissing, cuddling, roughhousing, and tickling--and via the sumptuous pictures.

Williams has done something...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Story, Poor Language
My kids loved this book. It was a favorite in our house when our two oldest were two and three years old.

The story is simple, but conveys a message of love and caring between parent and child that young children really relate to.

Having said that, the story is written in a style that reflects poor pronunciation and word usage ("dat" for...

4.0 out of 5 stars such a sweet book, Aug 21 2002
This review is from: More More More Said The Baby Board Book (Board book)
i love that there are so many colours (including the people) in this cute little story. my daughter (2 years) loves this book so much that i can't keep getting it from the library--i have to buy it! she loves when i kiss her belly button and her toes and her eyes and nose when i read the book to her. it's nice that the book starts out lively (Little Guy runs so fast, Little Guy's daddy has to run like anything just to catch that baby up!) and ends nice and quiet (Little Bird falls asleep so fast, Little Bird's mama has to run so fast just to catch that baby up.). it's a lovely bedtime, or anytime story.

Williams has done something transformative here with the illustrations, making everyday scenes into modern Rousseau sequences--there is a wildness and an energy and a saturation of delicious color that call to mind some of the French master's more wild scenes (not to mention Gauguin and van Gogh's juicy color choices). Both a treat to look at and a pleasure to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for the youngest, July 31 2002

As new, happy parents of a 9-month-old, my wife and I have been working our way through the books recommended for children under one year old. Our daughter loves the experience of being read to and looking at the pictures, and to our surprise she does not just respond to the simplest books--books with stories are sometimes more engaging to her than concept books.

We got a little frustrated with the abundance of books about animals and their mommies and have been searching out books that feature real children and their parents. This is one of the few we've found.

The illustrations are bright and eyecatching, the language is natural and rhythmic, and the three stories in the book all have a similar but not identical structure. They also show parents (and one grandparent) interacting lovingly and believably with their child.

So far as we are concerned, this is a must-have book for the youngest children, if only to add variety to a collection of Eric Carle (we have five different Eric Carle's....) and other more familiar board books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really cute book!, Feb 23 2004
By A Customer
This book is different from most other children's books I've seen. I love it - hubby hates it. The grammer is creative (and described in other reviews) so it takes a few readings for it to be easy to read aloud, but the stories are sweet and multicultural, and each story has a nice, repetitive rhythm to it. We read this to our 4-month-old daughter as a bed time story, and she loves it. The rhythm is great for soothing her at bedtime.

5.0 out of 5 stars More More More Said the Baby, Aug 31 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: More More More Said The Baby Board Book (Board book)
My 22-month old daughter loves this book and asks for it so often that I practically know it by heart! We usually read it at bedtime, since the third story features a little girl who falls asleep and is put to bed by her mom. The stories are sweet and feature tender, affectionate relationships. I also appreciate the book's multicultural aspect, as my daughter is adopted from Asia, and she seems to especially like the third story, which features an Asian child.

4.0 out of 5 stars review of more more more, Jun 11 2003
This review is from: More More More Said The Baby Board Book (Board book)
Williams, V. B. (1990). More, more, more said the baby. New York: Greenwillow Books.

Synopsis: The book contains three short stories about babies and the adults that love them. The first story is about a Caucasian father and his baby, Little Guy. Little Guy and his daddy swing and play together and Little Guy want to play more. The second story is about an African American grandmother and her grandchild, Little Pumpkin. Little Pumpkin's grandmother tickles her and plays with her toes, and Little Pumpkin wants more. The third story is about an Asian American mother and her baby, Little Bird. Little Bird's mama has to put her tired baby to bed.

Evaluation: This picture book has beautiful gouache illustrations that are bright and colorful. Vera Williams makes it easy for the reader to picture playing with an infant or young child through both the text and illustrations. All three babies in the book could represent your next door neighbor, a sibling, or a child. The book does a wonderful job of creating a child's desire for lots of positive adult interaction. Young children will be interested in this book because of the inviting illustrations and relating to the experiences of being tickled, chased, and loved. Adults will enjoy the loving reminder of enjoying the simple things in life like a laughing or sleeping child.

The text is great! "...to catch that baby up" is fun to read aloud. Wonderful colors, ethnic diversity, loving storyline - and perfect as a board book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our whole family fell in love with this book!, Nov 20 2001
This review is from: More More More Said The Baby Board Book (Board book)
This is a beautifully illustrated book with a sweet, touching text that should be "cooed" rather than read aloud. Author Williams tells anecdotes about parents and grandparents playing with and cuddling their babies. When my son was fifteen months old, this was his favorite book. He loved it so much, it soon became everyone's favorite book. One of my best memories is of listening to my husband reading the story of Little Guy being swung in the air by his daddy. Inevitably, when the story was over, my husband would swing his own little guy in the air.

However, don't believe the age range listed for this book in the on-line catalog. This is a book for and about BABIES. As soon as your little one has had enough of being known as "the Baby", you need to put this book aside and move on to another good book. My son outgrew this book with his toddler clothes.

4.0 out of 5 stars I don't care for it but my daughter loves it!, Nov 19 2001

This review is from: More More More Said The Baby Board Book (Board book)
I'm torn between what I think of the book and what my daughter thinks. She's 17 months old and wants to read this book daily. I, like other reviewers, found the text a bit awkward at first. Now that I've read it aloud about a million times and added my own twists and actions to accompany the story (kisses on the tummy, toes, eyes) I'm getting lulled into liking the book too. I LOVE that the white grandmother has a black grandbaby and that the daddy is a super dad and that there is an asian mother and daughter. The illustrations don't grab me because they have kind of a messy look, but they obviously grab my girl, because she just stares and stares at each page. So...take what you will from this review. For the amount of fun it's given us, despite my initial misgivings, I think it's worth a try. In fact, I'm buying it for a friend's baby for xmas.
