2.0 out of 5 stars Better ABC books exist
This book is reminiscent of the earlier Dr. Seuss ABC book. Both use rhythm, story line, and nonsense words to teach alphabet letters. But Dr. Seuss has an imaginative vignette for each letter and the rhymes are much better. This is one of those books which I expected to like but didn't. As a result, I find it hard to be enthusiastic when reading it to my child.

Incorporating a whimsical approach to teaching the alphabet, John Archambault's and Lois Ehlert's cacophony of color and text, "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom," could be the perfect book for toddlers. We started reading this to our son when he was just an infant, and to our surprise he was able to recite his entire alphabet by the time he was eighteen months old. The credit, in part, must go to this clever book.

The daring, lowercase "a" takes it upon himself to clamber up a lowly palm tree, calling out to the rest of the little letters to join him in the adventure. Unable to resist, the whole alphabet finds itself up in the now perilously bent tree. But soon- "Oh no! Chicka, chicka, BOOM, BOOM!" - chaos ensues as all find themselves in a heap on the ground, calling out to their uppercase parents, aunts, and uncles who soon arrive to help. Scrapes are soothed, tears are wiped, and the little letters eventually leave the scene of the disaster. That is until the moon shines bright and "a" repeats his taunt.

Told in bright colors, with big, round shapes and letters, this tale is a feast for the eyes. Author Archambault rhymes his tale, making it easy to remember (our son reads along with us on this book, unable to resist the lilting text.) The feel of the story makes it seem almost like an African parable, heavy on rhythm and sound, with memorable lines that stick with you and your child long after the cover is closed.

One of the finest children's book ever written, "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" should be a part of any young child's library. It's a story one can never tire of reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Letters, letters, here we go!, Jan 26 2002
This review is from: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (Paperback)
Living in a book filled with books and kids <bg> is heaven. We read aloud every day here in our house, and letter books have been favorites for years and years when the kids start learning to read. We live in Norway and speak Norwegian, so most of our children's books are also in Norwegian. Still, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is among the favorites. The text, by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault is so simple and still so filled with rhymes and humour. And Lois Ehlart's colorful illustrations go perfect with the words.

Learning the letters and learning to read can be a hard task for a child, and the book captures this perfectly. The letters live their own lives, climbing up the coconut tree, falling down again, bending, looping, having fun.......exactly what letters do when you are a newbie and try to sort them out. Any child will laugh of the way the letters act, and the sometimes hard task of learning the letters will be a wonderful game the child wants to play over and over again

We love this book in our house, and can recommens it to any young readers.

This is hands down the best book for children age 3 and under that I have ever encountered (and we have over 1,000 children's books in our home!). I began reading it to my oldest child when she was 2 months old, and by 16 months, she could recite the alphabet AND identify all 26 letters of the alphabet-- upper AND lower case! I give most of the credit to this wonderful book (but keep in mind, we read it EVERYDAY, often times, several times a day!) My youngest child picks this book out of the shelf first and foremost. He is only 13 months old, but he absolutely loves this book and prefers it over most toys. Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault have more than a classic here, not to mention the great illustrations by Lois Ehlert. If you're looking for the perfect book to teach your children the alphabet or you just simply want an entertaining book that is sure to be a hit, look no further. This is it!

Children love this book and the version on the cd read by Ray Charles leads to a discovery of braille because "Ray Charles is blind so how can he read the story?"

5.0 out of 5 stars Chicka Chicka Fabulous!, Sep 8 2011
This review is from: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (Paperback)
My 3 year old toddler loved this book! He had me read it to him over and over again. By about the third day, my toddler was reading it to me! The pictures are simple, bright, and attention getting. The story line is simple, fun, and catchy. If you want to teach your child about the alphabet, or simply encourage reading, this book will make a great teaching aid!

You're not going to believe this alphabet book - it's bold, bright and beautiful! Brilliant colors fill each polka-dot bordered page as the alphabet begins its adventurous journey to the top of a coconut tree. The rhymes are irresistible and fun to read again and again.

CHICKA CHICKA BOOM BOOM 2010 is the first oversized board book edition, and in this case bigger is definitely better - more eye-popping than ever. Originally published in 1989 this alphabet book has appealed to generations of youngsters and shows no signs of slowing down. Now, the latest edition gives an entirely new generation of children the opportunity to learn as they play beginning with "A told B, and B told C, `I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree.''

What a festive way to learn ABC's all the way through to "Last to come X Y Z. And the sun goes down on the coconut tree..."

Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for ESL too, Nov 17 2009
This review is from: Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (Paperback)
This product is the full story (paperback) with small letters climbing the coconut tree.

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a classic, but now I'm using it with Japanese ESL kindergarten students. They like to repeat the "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom", and they enjoy the colorful pictures too. Great purchase and highly recommended for all children!

You're not going to believe this alphabet book - it's bold, bright and beautiful! Brilliant colors fill each polka-dot bordered page as the alphabet begins its adventurous journey to the top of a coconut tree. The rhymes are irresistible and fun to be read again and again.

This version is printed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original published in 1989, and gives a new generation of children the opportunity to learn as they play beginning with "A told B, and B told C, `I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree.'"

There's a festive commemorative poster on the inside of the dust jacket decorated with brilliant polka dot candles and a headline reading "A told B, and B told C, `Let's celebrate twenty years of climbing up the coconut tree!'"

Enjoy!

This book is great and is full of rhymes! My 3 year-old son just loves having it read to him, although he now knows it by heart of course! It's a great book to get your kids to learn the alphabet, my son already knew his alphabet before getting this book but he still finds great pleasure in this book. Great colours, great rhymes, just plain fun, period. Definitly add it to your child's library.
