350wpm-1500wpm in Six Months. Newly discovered literacy.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Breakthrough Rapid Reading (Paperback)
... It's hard to call what this book teaches "rapid reading." That phrase makes it sound exotic and unreachable. I truly believe after reading this that everyday people can learn to read at 1000+ words per minute with excellent retention. I first read this as a 20-year-old college student. With it, I learned to clock my reading rate at 350 words-per-minute. Like most people, I read from left-to-right in "rows of corn," sub-vocalizing. Although extremely bright, I never really could enjoy extensive reading. Doing it for school was a chore. I tried all sorts of methods for taking notes on books. I tried a tape recorder. I tried writing in the margins. I tried post-it-notes. I tried marking page sections and writing notes longhand in a separate notebook. I tried typing at my computer as I read. I'd end up with sometimes dozens of pages of notes and outlines yet not feel like I could discuss the text fluently. This book teaches how to process text differently. Now, I relax my eyes and ideas simply flow from the words. A page in a book is no longer like a step ladder or rows of corn -- but it is like a sculpture. As a pianist, I can say that reading text for me has become like reading music. Just as I can see a sheet of music and gain an idea of the song, I can look at a written page and see ideas. Every author has a rhythm and style. After extensive and sometimes frustrating practice, based on techniques in this book, my understanding of text has completely changed. I am much more able to understand an author's central themes. Whereas before it seemed I could only think on a scale of words and sentences, now I can easily think on a scale of sections and chapters. I have much better judgement in taking notes and feel able to discuss books that I read much more fluently. Books that might have taken me 15 hours to read before now comfortably take 3 or 4. I am now able to actually enjoy reading fiction. It's more like listening to a new peice of music now than forcing myself to plow through a haystack of text line-by-line and inch-by-inch. Literacy education truly needs to incorporate methods of visual reading. My only regret about this book was that I realized I hadn't been fully taught to read before!

One of the Better Speed Reading Books,
By Agent Excel "agentexcel" (Hillsboro, OR USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Breakthrough Rapid Reading (Hardcover)
This is the third speed reading book I read. It is in my opinion the best of the three. You can read through these speed reading books pretty quickly because they don't have much content. They all cover essentially the same materials. The following is a summary of the main ideas in these books. People read slowly because of the following reasons: 1. Subvocalization: This is to produce the sounds of the words mentally while they read. This habit essentially limits the reading speed to the speed of subvocalization. Subvocalization also has a side effect of making people read sequentially. 2. Regression: This is to backtrack while you read. This may be caused by a lack of confidence. 3. Lack of Purpose: Without clearly defining the purpose of their reading, people tend to read useless material with the same intensity as useful material. The book suggests using the appropriate amount of care to the materials at hand. The book suggests various ways of overcoming the above problems. The book also gave some suggestions on notes taking to faciliate recall. I read this book in less than 5 hours using speed reading techniques from other books. The reason why I can do it is quickly is because speed reading books generally do not have that much content. Hence they are amendable to the techniques speed reading.

Can work wonders for your speed!,
By Momei (Portland, OR USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Breakthrough Rapid Reading (Paperback)
I didn't find the comprehension tips very helpful, but my speed simply skyrocketed. I'd never been a fast reader before, averaging only around 300 words per minute. But more and more I found out as I move on to college, reading would become an invaluable skill. I started to read many books that claimed to "triple" your speed, but to no avail. However, when I read this book, my speed jumped from 300 to 500 within ONE WEEK. And after 5 weeks I could read as fast as 1500 words per minute. It was a miracle! All the drills really push you to sweep through material FAST - and with lots of practice you get used to it and speed reading becomes a part of you. I'm so thankful because not only does that take a huge burden off my shoulders for future reading, it also impresses my friends when I can go through an English book within 2 days while they work on it for 3 weeks!

Speed reading with improved comprehension? Can't beat that,
By Taylor Street (Westwood, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Breakthrough Rapid Reading (Paperback)
Peter Kump's Breakthrough rapid reading has lived up to it's title. Lately I have been wandering around libraries and catalogs looking for a good book to help my comprehension and recall for the Verbal section of the SAT. I picked up this book and noticed that it had substantially more comprehension sections than any other speed reading book I had seen previously. After 3 days into the course not only could I understand more of my reading, but I had more than tripled my reading rate (176 wpm to 610 wpm [no joke!]). This book takes much practice, but if you are as dedicated as I am, it will be no problem. This book explains that there are different types of reading. It will help you in every aspect of your reading life...guaranteed...

This is a joke.,

I'm a university student with top grades from my university in Canada. I find that with complicated material I tend to be a little slower reader so I set out to improve my speeds. I picked up this book and was very enthusiastic about becoming a better reader, however, I was disappointed. Using your finger is to say the least, annoying. When you increase speed you can surely understand what your reading but I find it very hard to maintain retention. If you're reading a newspaper or magazine, fine, but if it's something saturated in information it is not realisitic that you can improve your reading speed by 2 or 3 times with resonable retention with this text. Maybe if you went to the courses that the author offers over a few months you could improve, but I think it is a joke if you think this 10 dollar book will do the trick.

I was already what was considered a pretty fast reader by its tests; in the 400wpm (words per minute) range at maximum speed. After going through the first half of the book, I was well over a thousand for the vast majority of all text. This has enabled me to go from a book or two a month to reading two or three a week, and has fundamentally changed my life. Even after the first couple of weeks I was dramatically improved, and after a couple of months of daily use, I was just flying. On the bad side, I had trouble staying at the chapter per day pace, given a job, working on my Master's, and trying to spend time with my family. Still, I practiced, kept up with the new techniques, and continued to improve. Even though I left off just after I learned how to read at diagonals, it's stuck with me and been the best expenditure of time I've made. I can't believe this isn't taught in school; it would've made college a completely different experience for me.

Quick, effective, and astounding,

I started this book only two weeks ago and have quadrupled my reading rate. I was a very slow reader and it caused me many dificulties. I tried many computer aplications and other books, but nothing truly helped like this book. It tells you exactly what the problem is and exactly how to fix it. Although its a fairly large time commitment, I found myself looking forward to the time I set aside to drill, just because I was so amazed at the improvements. It used to take me a month to get through a book, if I didn't get so tierd that I put it down, and now I can get through a 200 page book in around two hours!

The best book, I've ever seen, on speed reading!,
By
This review is from: Breakthrough Rapid Reading (Paperback)
I ran across an older version of this book years ago at a public library. At the time I had seen a few infomercials on speed reading so I decided to see if I could find a book on it. I did the initial drill and I was reading at exactly 240 words a minute, which is the average rate for a college student according to the book's graph. I went through the book and within 3 weeks I was reading at a rate of over 800 words a minute. The drills are tremendous. However, I got lazy and started putting it off. Like an athlete if you don't work out (drill) you will lose the speed. Speed reading is something I really regreted not sticking with years ago and I'm glad they through out this new edition (hardly changed, just some internet references). Within 3 weeks I've broken 1000 words a minute and I feel like I could have gotten so much more if I drilled myself harder. I've tried out Evelyn Wood's book and a photo reading book, but by far I consider this one the best. When you first learn to read with your finger it might seem strange, however with time you'll notice the speed skyrocketing and it will feel uncomfortable when you don't use it.
