5.0 out of 5 stars Do these bad reviewers have a vendetta?
Style is personal, I understand that. I recently purchased a copy of Style at Home while visiting Atchison, KS. I was not expecting a store like Nell Hill's in a town of 10,000. It is true that the book does not give the full picture, but it does give some interesting ways to look at the way a home and its furnishings are setup. The book urges the reader to use things...

1.0 out of 5 stars No sense of style here
There is no sense of style here. It is very predictable and low-brow. Nothing interesting or unique. I am guessing that anyone who likes this book is either very old or hopelessly lacking in any personal style sense. how sad

It is true that the book does not give the full picture, but it does give some interesting ways to look at the way a home and its furnishings are setup. The book urges the reader to use things in new and interesting ways while not throwing out the history and the style of the things you have. It does not surprise me that some designers may not like this book, it puts some great tools in the hands of the people who would probably be paying them. If you ever get a chance, beat a path to Nell Hill's and check out the hospitality that is evident in the pictures that are displayed in this lovely book. And by the way, I am not old, I am 25! Mary Carol, keep up the good work!

I love this book. It gives great ideas on how much small details will do for a room. I also recommend M.C.Garrity's christmas book. Really nice!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very old looking, Jan 9 2003
This review is from: Nell Hill's Style at Home (Hardcover)
Unfortunately, I received this book for a holiday gift. As a designer myself, I was surprised that this book was published so recently, because it looks old and dated. Fussy rooms crammed with too many cutesy touches is not something I even want to share with my design clients, so I did not keep this on the bookshelf in my office.

1.0 out of 5 stars show me something new!!, Dec 28 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Nell Hill's Style at Home (Hardcover)
Can anyone get published doing something very adequate?
Absolutely NO NEW IDEAS in this book. It has a JCPenney catalog look to it. Every single piece of furniture and accessories look new and bought from some inexpensive store. Nothing offbeat, personal or innovative about it. Flip through at the bookstore, but do not waste your money. (And her second book is exactly the same!)

1.0 out of 5 stars Eeeeeeeeeeeeeooooooooooooooooooooo., Dec 3 2002
This review is from: Nell Hill's Style at Home (Hardcover)
I cannot imagine why a friend gave me this book. Maybe she meant it for my grandmother. This book is scary. It is so dated with rooms crammed with stuff. The same boring, old-fashioned mood runs through it.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new decorating bible!!, May 21 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Nell Hill's Style at Home (Hardcover)
In preparation for our move into a larger pre-war New York apartment, I have pored through countless decorating books, only to walk away feeling as if I hadn't learned anything I didn't know already. This book, however, is completely different. Every page is full of amazing and completely do-able ideas. The rooms are decorated exactly the way I would have done, had I the imagination and creativity that Nell Hill obviously possesses in such abundance. I fully admit that I plan on adopting many of the decorating ideas in this book into my new home, and most importantly, I finally feel inspired! This is a fantastic book for anyone who loves traditional furnishings and has a desire to surround themselves with beauty every day. And as a final note: In response to those who deemed the book to "old" or not sufficiently urbane- I'm 30 and live in Manhattan, and I, for one, adore this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!, Mar 15 2002

Wade Adkins (portland, oregon United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nell Hill's Style at Home (Hardcover)
I had the pleasure to meet Ms Garrity about three years ago in her wonderful shop. This book is a statement of comfort and beauty as is the shop that inspired it. The rooms portrayed are wonderfully cluttered with collected treasures and beautifull heirlooms. The basic style is "traditional", however Ms Garrity seems to be able to deviate from the normal rules of tradition. She links polished silver trays with rusty urns and garden tools. She allows whimsical touches among her beautiful artwork. It seems that while Ms Garrity has an appreciation for beauty she does away with the snobbery of some of her counterparts creating an overall look that is beautifull without being inaccessable.
