This diet works, and it is completely fulfilling and delicious. I am so happy I went on it. I have extremely high blood pressure--so high I will always have to take medications for it. 2.0 out of 5 stars Just another diet
Hypertension runs in my family and I have dealt with it for years. This book was no help at all. I discovered long ago that carbohydrates in particular bread and sugar along with coffee had to go. This book wants one to subsist on grain products along with some fruit and small amounts of vegetables. It might work for some but for me it was far too complicated I prefer...

This diet works, and it is completely fulfilling and delicious. I am so happy I went on it. I have extremely high blood pressure--so high I will always have to take medications for it. I wanted to go on this diet simply because I thought it would be a really healthy way to lose a few pounds. I honestly was not expecting it to lower my blood pressure. Well, I was very surprised to see that it did! After two weeks my BP dropped about 12 points on the upper and 5 points on the lower, consistently. It is really surprising! I was even able to lower my dosage a little. I've enjoyed eating this way tremendously. For anyone who wants to eat healthy, this is a great way to start. This is the most scientifically supported and most highly endorsed eating plan out there.
It is similar to most sensible nutrition plans, with a little more dairy and a little less meat. It is very easy to follow.

I can only say, Congratulations and thank you to the team behind it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Too good to be true -- but it is true!, May 24 2002
By A Customer
I ordered this book for three reasons: Since I taught a course in college-level nutrition, I am appalled at how terrible the diets of too many of us really are. Plus I am something of a fitness nut. Finally I am also a "foodie" who enjoys cooking and eating delicious "gourmet quality" meals that also incorporate first-rate nutrition.

This is the diet book that the USA has been waiting for but too few persons seem to know about it -- yet. It is scientifically accurate and the conclusions of the authors are sound. It is proof that eating for improved health and fitness need not be boring. Indeed, the day after I received the book, I prepared the mango/black bean salad to rave reviews and no leftovers.

The message is not new: We need to increase the fruits, veggies, and whole grain foods in our diet, and to decrease red meats, sodium, and sweets. Although the target audience is those with hypertension, nearly everyone can benefit from accepting the book's challenge to try the DASH diet for two weeks -- and for a lifetime. The fact that the authors go beyond the science and present imaginative, delicious recipes and menus is a definite strength of the book.

A salute to the authors for this timely book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sensible eating plan, May 5 2009

This book provides a sensible eating plan that I found as easy as anything that still takes some willpower to accomplish. It gives enough detail that you can start right away and seemed to work for me, very recently diagnosed with HBP. After a month, I have lost 9 lb. and the doctor feels I can try cutting my meds in half. I am eating more bread - whole wheat of course - and fruit than ever and rarely feel deprived. I cut my salt back but it doesn't say you must. Cons: doesn't give a category for eggs. Get's into the details before too long. I copied the daily chart to keep track on the fridge. I can see this as a lifetime commitment to nourish your body that I can keep 98% of the time - and for me that is good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Information Base for the Dash Diet, Mar 17 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this book because I needed information on understanding this life style change to change my blood pressure. It helped me understand allot and incorporate Healthy Eating within the no salt zone, personally I couldn't follow the regime of breakfast, lunch etc. but I learned that what I was eating now could be incorporated into this diet. ie: I always eat oatmeal, walnuts, almonds, crans for breakfast and an egg 2 a week with tst and turkey bacon and for lunch it usually is an almond or peanut butter sandwich on Squirrley Bread with celery and on the side carrots and celery. I found it was really easy to incorporate the way I eat into this plan.

I have tried some of the recipes in this book and they were great, even my husband ate it and says not bad.

The one thing I didn't like is the calorie counting diet plan.

If you want just recipes the Reader's Digest Eating to lower Blood Pressure is a God send, every recipe I have tried in that book meets and exceeds all expectations and the amounts you can eat, Hearland Meatloaf is better than my own. Good Luck with your BP, and if you don't know where to start with your No Sodium Diet, this is full of great info, even information on eating pizzas, McDonald's etc.

Hypertension runs in my family and I have dealt with it for years. This book was no help at all. I discovered long ago that carbohydrates in particular bread and sugar along with coffee had to go. This book wants one to subsist on grain products along with some fruit and small amounts of vegetables. It might work for some but for me it was far too complicated I prefer simply to know how many calories I eat with the use of a gram scale. So I read it, tried it and will be sending it to the Thrift store when I clear out the bookcase.
