Gripping read but couldn't stand the main character,
By PJ "bluedogbooks" (Fish Creek, WI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Perfect Match: A Novel (Paperback)
I'm an avid fan of Jodi Picoult but I have to say that this one was my least-liked. The main character, Nina, is a terribly misguided excuse for a mother that certainly doesn't deserve the gifts that she finally receives. The writing and twist of the plot make this a classic Picoult novel. Even though I could not stand Nina, I had a difficult time putting this book down until I had finished it. I admire Jodi Picoult's work even though I did not like the main character of this book.

The only "miss" on a list of winners by this author.,

Jodi Picoult is one of my all-time favorite authors, but she misses the mark on this book: her "heroine" isn't heroic. She's a bitchy, over-worked, non-maternal misguided woman, who does what she does for the wrong reasons. I don't like her, I don't like her actions and the only part of the book I can sympathize with is the indictment of the way our criminal justice system prosecutes pedophiles. Skip this one, but buy every single other one that Ms. Picoult has to offer, including the latest, Second Glance. They're all wonderful, thought provoking and filled with truly three-dimensional, likeable, human (warts and all) characters.

Perfect Match is the first book I've read in one sitting in a very long time. I would just like to say to readers that complained about Nina that we are all flawed in various ways, that is what made her an interesting character. I didn't like her either, but that is part of what made the book a page-turner. She obviously was misguided in her actions, even (or I should say especially) as a mother. Perfect Match was the first Jodi Picoult book I ever read, and I can't wait to read all the others.

A perfect book...,

I'm not sure what it is exactly about Jodi's books that make me love them so much. Perhaps it is the riveting nature of the storylines, or the vividness of the prose, or maybe the fact that I can sit and turn pages for hours and never get bored. I have never been disappointed by any of Jodi's novels. Perfect Match is no exception....A little bit on the controversial side, especially in light of things that have taken place in this country lately, Perfect Match delves into the lives of District Attorney Nina Frost, her husband, Caleb, and their 5-year-old son, Nathaniel. Spending her days in the courtroom and her nights preparing for cases, Nina's job takes up a lot of her time. Prosecuting rape cases and child molesters is just part of the job...until it becomes personal. Nathaniel has suddenly and unexplainably become mute. After a visit to a psychologist, the Frost family learns the awful truth -- Nathaniel has been sexually molested. The book opens with a bang -- literally -- and doesn't stop building until the very end. There were some surprising twists in here, which I've come to expect and love in Jodi Picoult's writing. Jodi has written this very sensitive subject with tenderness and honesty, and no doubt Perfect Match has become one of my favorites. Can't wait to read more!

An Interesting Perspective!,

This review is from: Perfect Match: A Novel (Paperback)
Normally I don't like books where murder is involved to any degree, so I was a bit skeptical going into this one.The author has a unique writing style. The book is written in first person narrative, where the narrator is Nina, the mother. It is also written in third-person from the viewpoint of all the main characters (all of them EXCEPT Fisher, Nina's attorney). In between chapters it also contains little memories written in first person by Nathaniel, the son. Perfect Match is a story of a mother trying to protect her son. She is a prosecutor and has handled many child molestation cases only to come home one day and find out her own child has been molested. She knows that the legal system does not work in the child's best interest in these sorts of cases, so she decides to take the law into her own hands. I didn't care for any of the main characters. I thought all of them were completely selfish. The ending of the book has a twist, but it doesn't really make the book any better in my opinion. All in all, it was a WONDERFUL book. Definitely one of my new favorites.

Good book - kept my interest,

I have spent a lot of time starting books lately, and not finishing them. I finished this book in 2 sittings. It was well written and emotional. I felt that the characters were flawed, which made them endearing, and they were also dimensional, which made the book even better. No surprises here, but a good solid read nonetheless.

A Mother's Love,
By Diane "dianemax" (Newfoundland, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Perfect Match: A Novel (Paperback)
This was a good story by Jodi Picoult, but not a great one. I, like many of the reviewers here, did not feel much sympathy for the mother, Nina Frost. I don't want to give any of the storyline away but she does raise some interesting questions in this book regarding the issue of "an eye for an eye" and just how far a parent will go for their child. The writing style was wonderful and I am always impressed with the way that this author can draw you into a story. I felt that some things in this novel did not ring true however and the characterization was not up to par. Overall, an enjoyable book. Her previous works have been better however.

Not One of Picoult's Best Books.,

I always look forward to reading a book by Jodi Picoult. Unfortunately, Perfect Match left a rather bitter taste in my mouthand will be one Picoult book I won't recommend. This book by an authorknown for her heart wrenching and thought provoking books, in my opinion, missed its mark. The basic story involves one tragedy compounded by another tragedy. And a main character, an assistant district attorney that added up to some predictability and rather unlikely courtroom scenes. Even a last minute twist didn't make up for a book I could have skipped.Previous to reading Perfect Match,I read Picoult's books The Pact, Keeping Faith and Plain Truth. For those interested in reading this author, who has always impressed me before, these are worthwhile titles to read and savor. Because I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this author in the past, I now look forward to reading some of her older titles I missed and her new book due out shortly, Second Glance.

Why read it -- NOW?,

I like to read the reviews given by others to help find a good book to read -- one that quite a few people have read and enjoyed. I have read several books based on others reviews on ths site and have been completely satisfied. However, after reading the first review for this book (and a few others that followed) why should I even bother reading it? The first review told the entire story, including the parts that should be left to read and discover for yourself. I can't imagine reading this book now that story has been told in too much detail by a reviewer. Thanks for spoiling a possibly good book.
