Quick and Dirty,
By
This review is from: Memorial Day (Mass Market Paperback)
The nation's capital is buzzing with Memorial Day preparations. Despite the energy of the city, CIA operative Mitch Rapp senses trouble and the intelligence gathered is pointing to a major terrorist attack on the United States. Rapp wants to get to the sources and immediately leaves for Afghanistan, where he leads a Special Forces unit on a daring commando raid across the border into a remote Pakistani village. Their target: an Al Qaeda stronghold, once there, Rapp and his team discover plans for a catastrophic nuclear attack on Washington DC. With Memorial Day closing fast, a way must be found to prevent a disaster of unimaginable proportions. The counterterrorism team is on a quest to prevent a tragedy...Vince Flynn is a great action thriller writer. Fans of the TV program "24" will love this fast pace book, action is quick and dirty, highly entertaining. The main characters are: Rapp an unbelievable super hero, Irene Kennedy Rapp's handler and boss, a woman with an exceptional outlook towards his attitude and President Hayes a trusting man giving Rapp unrealistic freedom to act. The book is fun to read, a real cliff-hanger, very hard to put down.

Tom Clancy, Move over. No, Move out.,
By incabrain (Bainbridge Island, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Memorial Day (Hardcover)
Flynn has surpassed Clancy's ability to tell a griping story of political intrigue with good, solid, research at the heart of the story. Flynn focuses on the story, and unlike Clancy, doesn't need to prove how much knowledge he personally has acquired on his story material.Flynn has the authority of an insider in his material, and stays close to realistic terrorism scenario studies. This is evidenced by the stunning accuracy of his plot lines in his previous books - everything from predicting Saddam's behavioral patterns, to the way the world has reacted to ongoing terrorism conflicts. He's obviously a student first, writer second. I've found a new favorite author.

Another great Mitch Rapp book! Vince Flynn knows how to put together an action filled thriller and considering today's world this book is very timely! In fact after reading this book you should be very scared. If you are already a fan you should like this book, if you are new to Flynn, but like Clancy, Cussler, ect. then you should like this book. check out:"A TOURIST IN THE YUCATAN" Another cool thriller!

Great! Fast Read.,

This review is from: Memorial Day (Mass Market Paperback)
This book reads like an action adventure novel should. A fast pace with suspense from the first page to the last. The characters are developed well enough to empathize with and the bad guys are smart and well organized. Which I appreciate in a thriller.Memorial Day deals with the topical issue of terrorism in the U.S. and suspense will carry the reader forward from chapter to chapter. If you enjoy Ludlum, Child, or Diehl you should enjoy this fastpaced action packed read.

Great ride...a bit scary!,

This review is from: Memorial Day (Hardcover)
If you like to stay upate reading great escapist fiction, read this thriller. The title give a lot away, and the timing is an added thrill to the ride. Undoubtedly the best Vince Flynn yet. The sole flaw is the epilogue, 5 pages that were just a rightwing rant that detracted from the total effect, and in future editions I think it could be jetisoned without harm. After all, this is fiction...or is it?

Rapp is back... and Flynn is back in the Pantheon,
By
This review is from: Memorial Day (Hardcover)
At last. High-level CIA operative Mitch Rapp is back. A Rapp-led special forces team wreaks havoc on a terrorist enclave located in no-man's land on the Pakistani/Afghani border. What they find in a terrorist bunker is literally earth-shattering: a map of Washington DC complete with concentric blast circles. And it's apparently a damage estimate based upon the planned detonation of a 20-kiloton nuclear weapon near the DC downtown.Through violent, but off-the-record means, Rapp interviews the five remaining terrorists. Only a couple survive the interviews, but Rapp has most of the information he needs. A nuke is scheduled to enter the U.S. on a container ship from Karachi. While the weapon is being tracked down, an ironic turn of events is occurring within the Attorney General's office. The Patriot Act is a political hot potato and senior members of the State Department are moving to kill the Act to save the president's re-election bid. Rapp, true to form and ignoring politics completely, is more concerned with another issue: is another nuke entering the country as a fallback plan for the terrorists? And when the State Department starts treating the nuclear threat inside the US like it's a law enforcement problem, Rapp unleashes the dogs of war. After Flynn's last book -- a disappointing effort in my view -- I made a few suggestions. Amazingly, he seemed to take them or, at least, arrive at them on his own. 1) Anna Rielly out of the picture: check Memorial Day is more than a pot-boiler thriller; it raises the compelling issue of human rights. At what point, for instance, is it acceptable to torture a suspect when the information could save a hundred thousand lives? I rate this novel 9 out of 10. On the merits of his latest effort, Flynn is back in the pantheon (Raymond Chandler, Lee Child, Nelson DeMille, CS Forester, and *AJ Quinnell)... on probation, but moving up fast.

Vince Flynn is the best writer of action thrillers in the world today. Mitch rapp is a true patriot, who is willing to do what it takes to get the job done. I do question some of his tactics, and would hate to see them become reality, but in this post 9/11 world we can't have to question things. In conclusion, this is a book that will keep you guessing until the end and is more frightening than any terror story because the plot very well could happen!

After the slow and flat "Seperation of Powers" Vince Flynn is back on track. Fast paced, full action. Good story line. The author even left the wife of the hero out of the story this time.I just wish Vince Flynn would bring back some characters from "Term Limits" e.g. Scott Coleman and his team etc. The characters and plots are well thought through. |
