Good but not great....,
By Chelsea "Chels20" (Winnipeg, Canada) - See all my reviews

This was probably my least favorite of Jennifer Weiner's novels...not to say that it isn't worth reading. I found it to be interesting and kept me hooked but my overall enjoyment of it wasn't that great. I didn't walk away from it and say "wow that was a great book!" like I did for her other novels. I can't really pinpoint what it was...perhaps the whole murder-mystery theme seemed out of place....Anyways, it's worth a shot but don't expect to be amazed...

Some good parts, but ending is a letdown,

I just finished reading "Goodnight Nobody." While I connected with our heroine, I thought there were too many characters/suspects to keep track of--I felt an excel spreadsheet of who's who might have been helpful. Not what I was looking for in a chick-lit read. And the ending--total letdown! While I won't completely spoil it, the best part of the story was Kate's turmoil between Ben and Evan. Would she stay with the husband she liked, or follow her heart? So while I enjoyed the comedic parts, identified to a degree with Kate and her BFF, was completely ticked off with the ending and feel cheated.

OK, somewhat disappointing,

Mildly engaging, sometimes funny. I could take it or leave it. I enjoyed In her Shoes and Good in Bed as light reading chick-lit with good stories, real life drama and witty characters, so this one was a bit of a let down. I found the main character a bit annoying and the whole storyline void of truly likable or relatable characters.

This book is witty and intriguing, entertainment reading at its best. I love all of Ms. Weiner's books, but I think this is my favourite.

'Goodnight Nobody' is a surface level, warmed over chick lit book that fell a little flat for me. Jennifer Weiner definitely has comedic capabilities and appeal; however, I felt her latest attempts at creating a sort of "murder mystery" were weak and a little shallow. The book starts out with Kate Klein frumpy and annoying and ends with Kate Klein frumpy and annoying. And then there's the murder mystery...I mean, really, how many people find their neighbor hacked to death and then leave the house, casually call the police, and carry on with their lives? I think most of us would be catatonic or at the very least, would have run screaming into the street, having nightmares for months on end. It's this kind of superficiality and shallowness that just doesn't work, and I'm not sure if the casual triteness of the story was to make it funny or just because she couldn't think of how to really delve into a "murder mystery". It's not a horrible book, and it was entertaining for awhile, but then you're going "Yeah right" and "That's ridiculous!" in parts that don't add up. Near the end, there is a scene in which it seems we are supposed to finally realize the reasons for the unrequited love of this gorgeous man from Kate Klein's past. He's the one who seemed interested but wasn't-but really was- and then- nothing- nope we don't get any answers. It almost makes you think she's working on a sequel to this book. Then there's the matter of the title...this title makes no sense for this book other than the fact that she reads Goodnight Moon to her kids. And another thing, why is there a picture of a sexy-legged woman on the cover? We're talking about a frumpy woman trying to solve a murder in the suburbs here, not Sex and the City.Bottom line is, I think this book was trying to be too many things to too many readers, and it ended up being just an average book that doesn't live up to the previous examples of fine fiction from Jennifer Weiner. |
