I just finished reading this book the other night. It was magnificent! Then last night I was going through the channels on tv and saw nothing worth watching was on as usual. Then I stumbled upon the Hallmark Channel. There it was!! The Christmas box !! I couldn't believe how the movie brought the book to life! This book has really touched my heart as I am sure it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Touching Story, Mar 28 2004
By
This review is from: Christmas Box (Hardcover)
If you can read, you should read this book. If you can't, you should get someone to read it to you. The "Christmas Box" was a beautiful family tale. The story is extremely short, taking only a couple of hours to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tender and Sweet and an Easy Read, Mar 3 2004
This review is from: Christmas Box (Hardcover)
The Christmas Box is marketed exactly as it should be -- a prettily packaged "gift book" with a melt-your-heart story.

While Richard Paul Evans certainly gives us an easy read with a good message (such a rare gem these days!), his writing does tend to fall a bit flat at times, succumbing to unnecessary detail or, in some instances, cliche.

If this writing style doesn't bother you, you will absolutely love this book. It's a refreshing change from much that is out there, and you will most likely sigh contentedly after you've finished the last page.

Pick up this book for a light read -- if anything, it's definitely the kind of story that will draw you right in and keep you reading.

And it's just the right size to squeeze into somebody's Christmas stocking as well!

This is a very nice story. It only took a couple hours to read and it was a couple hours well spent. I suggest reading his personal memoir immediatly after reading this, it is just as touching.

Rick and Keri are struggling young parents, with 4-year-old daughter Jenna when they answer an ad in the local papers for caretakers of a large house and elderly woman. In exchange for room and board, the family is charged with minimal household duties, among them being cooking meals for Mary, the matriarch of the house. It soon becomes clear that what Mary wants most is that feeling of family--in time for Christmas. During the move in the Parkin mansion, Rick discovers an old Christmas box in the attic, filled with what appears to be love letters. He soon learns that these are actually Mary's legacy of love to her long dead baby daughter--and that he and his family's reason for being the caretakers of Mary and the house have nothing to do with finances, but everything to do with recapturing the real reasons and joys of Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Part of my Christmas Tradition, Dec 24 2003

The Christmas Box touched me deeply when I first read it. 13 years ago, my wife and I lost a child. I have since had three beautiful children and the pain of our loss has receded. It never goes away, but it does lessen as the years pass.

Reading The Christmas Box opened the wounds that had scarred over, but in a good way. It reminded me that our son is still, and will always be, a part of our family. It helps me to keep things in their proper perspective. My family is what matters most. Everything else I do should be in support of my ability to care for them. And to share with them, every chance I get.

I also read the book, Christmas Voices, as suggested by another Amazon reviewer. It is not nearly the quality of The Christmas Box, though its author attempts to convey a similar message.

Thank you Mr. Evans for your beautiful work. I read it every couple of years around the holidays to adjust my perspective on life.

This review is from: Christmas Box (Hardcover)
This is a book of loss, love and the relationship between a parent and a child. Perfect for this time of year... reminds you that Christams is not all about "Santa and reindeer", it's about God, love and family. Worth an hour of your time for this quick, but meaningful read.

Mr. Evans has done it again. The Christmas Box was a great story. It gives the reader something to think about while the story is being read about what is truly important and what the first Christmas present was. Think about it and see if you know the answer. Great book. You must read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Series, Jun 24 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Christmas Box (Hardcover)
This is the first Richard Evans book I have ever read and was quite pleased with the author's writing skills and the book's intensity. This is a wonderful book about life and love, a common theme throughout the three-book series, of which The Christmas Box is the first story.
