Having done five reviews in the past two months, I think this is my favourite of the books I have read. A group of Eastern ladies has come west to attend the Wyatt Herdsman School in Barnett, KS. Each of these ladies has different for their initial involvement, but the ultimate goal is the same - to learn the skills needed to become the wife of a rancher and then to find her man.

In that sense, Tressa is no different. But her very nature is a quiet one and she is constantly bumbling over things and making a mess of things which actually serves to endear her to nearly everyone - except Luella who only sees Tressa as a very real threat to her own pursuit of a husband. Tressa proves to learn the new role quite well and is the object of many of the young bachelors' eyes.

Abel Samms has no intention of even being interested in these ladies who have come. But, of course, bumbling Tressa begins to win his heart - without even meaning to. For Abel it is a constant battle against his own feelings. He's had his heart broken once by an Eastern girl and he does not intend to make that mistake again. Meanwhile, Abel's ranch is being threatened by rustlers who are slowly eating away at his herd. But with everyone involved, it isn't long before the rustlers are caught.

Read the book - you too will fall in love with the slightly awkward Tressa as she learns to milk a cow, brand a calf, and cook dinner for hungry cowboys and Abel who tries so desperately not to be interested but just can't help himself.

Tressa Neill knows that the Wyatt Herdsman School is her second-best chance at getting a husband. Orphaned, and alone with a penny to her name, Tressa joins up with five other girls and travels to Kansas to learn what it means to be a farmer's wife. However, the privaledged Tressa has lived the life of a lady, and doesn't know the first thing about cooking, cleaning, let alone how to milk a cow or wrangle a calf. Facing ridicule at every turn, the young woman strives to raise above everyone low expectations.

Meanwhile, Able Samms has trouble of his own. His herds are being picked off by rustlers, and if he doesn't figure out how to put a stop to it, he's going to have to sell the ranch. Able wants nothing to do with the girls that his neighbor, Aunt Hattie, brought from out east. He wasn't about to open his heart to another lady... not after the way that Amanda had treated him. But there's something about Tressa that makes him take notice.

Sawyer brings history to life in this wonderful story of second chances, forgivness, hope, and redemption. I especially enjoyed the wonderful way that Kim incorporated her dearly departed cat, Isabelle into the story. I look forward to reading many more wonderful tales by Kim Vogel Sawyer.

ANOTHER Book Review : "A Hopeful Heart" By Kim Vogel Sawyer
Kim Vogel Sawyer has outdone herself again!! She treats readers to a love story that definitely speaks to the heart. My attention was immediately captured upon beginning the first chapter, where Kim introduces the main character, Tressa, who is alone on a train, awaiting a rather frightening, adventure. She is to attend a one of a kind program that teaches young women from the East the skills to become a rancher- OR more importantly- become the wife of one!! Unknown challenges, a new environment- will she be able to be successful?? Tressa, who was once used to a privileged life, fears she will not have what it takes to survive and the hands-on instruction in skills such as milking a cow, branding a calf, cooking up a mess of grub for hungry ranch hands!!

Upon her arrival at the "school", Tressa meets others who in similar circumstances- many trials and oppositions. To meet the "man of her dreams" becomes somewhat of a mystery- who is that man? Which of two should she be with?? Mysteries are unveiled- cattle stolen, shots fired- you just never know what will happen next!!

All in all, this book was a delightful historical fiction, with a definite
Christian influence. Surprises around each corner.
