This review is from: Queen of Candesce: Book Two of Virga (Hardcover)
Queen of Candesce is the second book in the Virga trilogy, and actually manages to raise the ante by following the subsequent adventures of one of the most compelling female characters to ever come out of SF. Dropped essentially naked on a world in the middle of Virga, our heroine's relentless drive and capability allow her to rebuild her resources until she is once again positioned to continue her quest to find her missing husband. And it's all completely, compellingly, believable. Schroeder once again demonstrates that he is the master of world building, not just the physical habitat of Virga -- to which we were introduced in Sun of Suns -- but the social fabric of the societies his characters move through is completely detailed and convincing. Read Sun of Suns first (you won't be disappointed) to understand the setting, but know that the series (and possibly SF as a genre) peaks with The Queen of Candesce.
