3.0étoiles sur 5 Good and then maybe not so good, Avril 19 2003
Par Un client
This review is from: Much Ado About Nothing (VHS Tape)
I first saw this movie when I was in a high school production of Much Ado in February 2003. The first time I saw it, I liked it. And then, I started to find myself acting like the people in the movie. Then I watched the movie again, and I realized that it really isn't that great.
First of all, the only thing I don't like in this movie is the acting (and the gratuitous nudity at the beginning)--everything else is perfect. So let's cut to the acting.
Kenneth Branagh gives a good rendition of Benedick, although I think he could have been more emotional. He seems to run on this one emotion of confusion that gets tiring after awhile. Emma Thompson as Beatrice gets extremely annoying after awhile. The Hero and Claudio parts are played good. Then we get to Denzel and his part of Don Pedro. I am sorry but Denzel is not a Shakespearean actor. He really was bad. Keanu Reeves, playing Don John, wasn't as bad, but didn't come off as evil enough to me. Dogberry, Verges, and the watchmen are hilarious, they were good. Leonato was a little too weird for my tastes--he didn't seem to flow. Antonio was good...eh, that's most all of the main characters. Oh yeah, and Margaret was ugly.
So that's my review. Have a nice day

3.0étoiles sur 5 It's worth watching more than once., Mars 9 2003
A group comes to a little country paradise, which soon turns to chaos. An evil half brother to the prince turns love to jealousy, trust to betrayal, and plants rumours through his lackeys. A woman is nearly ruined, but a priest creates a plan to save the day with her still loyal friend's help.
There is also a more light and amusing sub-plot two get two bitter enemies to fall in love with a scheme played out by all. Most of the acting is excellent.

3.0étoiles sur 5 A good start to Shakespeare, Janv. 8 2003
Much Ado About Nothing is the lightest, most benign Shakespeare play produced by Hollywood in the Bard's 1990s renaissance. Modern audiences will find this version to be enjoyable and entertaining, but lacking the weighty issues normally explored in his more serious works.

I am not exactly a connoisseur of Shakespeare's comedies, but a modern film version of one of his works is light-years ahead of the typical melodramas churned out by Hollywood. Even though this particular play is limited by its simplistic "black and white" morality, the characters are complex and the plots and sub-plots go in directions that are not always predictable.

This play presents many of the devices common throughout much of Shakespeare's lighter works: hidden identity, love triangles, deception, usurped titles, etc. Someone just beginning to tackle the Bard's canon could make no better choice than starting with this little tale. I find it a much more appropriate play for High School Freshman than the popular choice of Romeo and Juliet. Do we really want 13 year olds hearing that suicide is a way to show love?

Many people have problems with some of the cast in this production, and maybe this criticism is justified. I find it interesting, however, to see Shakespeare performed by a wide range of modern actors. This version gives us classically trained thespians, Hollywood movie stars, and whatever category best suits Keanu Reeves.

3.0étoiles sur 5 Great Shakespeare, but not a great movie., Déc 6 2000
Par Dave Keiser (Columbia, MO USA) - Voir tous mes commentaires
Having read the reviews here, I figured the DVD version of 'Much Ado about Nothing' would be a great purchase. But, it's really just a glorified Shakespearean play. Now, I'm not saying that I don't like Shakespeare--I'm simply saying that it doesn't adapt well as a full length movie.

Granted, the actors and actresses do play their parts well. But if you can get past the Shakespearean language, you'll still find a very simple plot with a few holes left out. I'd think it would be much better if they had added a few more detailed transistions to help the story along. But since they are following a script for a stage play, the transistions are very abrupt, and not always fully explained.

If you like Shakespeare, I'm sure you'd enjoy this adaptation, but if just want to see a GOOD movie, this is not the one to watch.
