5.0 out of 5 stars Page turner for sure
I just finished another great book by Joy Fielding and as pretty much all her books it was a great read. The 4 main characters were well written and each of their stories was somehow connected to the other three. Not to many books have actually made me cry ,except this one as it is a very touching scene with one of the main characters delaing with her mother's illness...

3.0 out of 5 stars Grand Beach Read~
If I could, I would have given Grand Avenue 3.5 stars. It is a page turner, and left me eager to see how the story line would all play out, though I felt it somewhat fizzled out in the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book I Have Ever Read, Mar 9 2005
By
Danielle MacDonald (Nova Scotia (Canada)) - See all my reviews
I have read a lot of books over the last few years and this was by far my favorite. I now compare all of the other books I read to this one. It is such a moving story about four friends over the span of about 25 years. I often don't recommend books, but if you are looking for a wonderful way to engage yourself in print then i strongly recommend you pick this one up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grand Avenue is Awesome!!, Aug 3 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Grand Avenue (Unbound)
This is the third Joy Fielding novel I have read and I am hooked! Grand Avenue pulls you in on page one and doesn't let go. The four women in this story are well developed and believable. I am sure that every woman can relate to at least one of these characters. However I did find the descriptions of domestic violence very graphic and quite disturbing, so be forewarned! I recommend this book with a ringing endorsement. If you like a great read with deep characters and a little intrigue this book is for you! Danielle Steel eat your heart out, Joy Fielding has you beat hand down. Excellent summer read!

I would have to say that this was the best book I have ever read! I enjoyed it so much that everything in my life had to take a backseat for two days. Fielding developed her characters so well, and all four women in this book had such different, but interesting lives.

Definitely read this one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Grand Reading!!!, Sep 19 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Grand Avenue (Unbound)
This book is fabulously written. I loved the way the writer captured the bonding of the four friends and made you feel like you were one of them. The journey of their lives and friendship is captavating. Much like any friendship you endure lots of real truths, real laughter, real heartache and real tears. This book keeps you on your seat at all times because just when you think that all is well a rivoting twist takes place and the plots just thickens. Joy Fielding is a fabulous writer and I can't wait to continue to read her books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, May 28 2002

I started this book on a plane from Dallas to Los Angeles and continued reading to it's conclusion on a 15 1/2 hour flight to Melbourne--it was a great plane book ! I ran the gamut of emotions from terrible anger at an abusive husband, sympathy at some of the womens problems and joy at their closeness .It's an easy to read book, nicely written by a female who obviously enjoys a good relationship with other women. Don't want to give any of the plot away by going into details !

5.0 out of 5 stars Writing At It's Best!, May 26 2002
I am so grateful to the folks in my book club for recommending this book! From the opening page I couldn't put this book aside.

I was immediately drawn into the lives of Chris, Vicki, Barbara and Susan, four women who touched me deeply. How could such wonderful lives go so terribly wrong? The ensuing story of love and friendship mixed with mystery and tragedy kept me on the edge of my seat.

If you've never read a Joy Fielding book, I'd recommend you start here. Bravo!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Grand Beach Read~, May 16 2002

If I could, I would have given Grand Avenue 3.5 stars. It is a page turner, and left me eager to see how the story line would all play out, though I felt it somewhat fizzled out in the end.

Grand Avenue is the setting for four women, the Grand Dames, each unique in personality and appearance. Meeting in the park near their home with their young daughters, the women become fast friends and confidents. The stage is set in the first chapter, as the reader is immediately warned that two of the friends will die, one a horrible death, and that one will turn out not to be a friend at all, a betrayor.

Grand Avenue was an entertaining, page-turner that left me anxious for the conclusion and kept me guessing with lots of twists and turns. Aside from the pure entertainment factor, the story also takes a look at the why's behind a person's personality, the insecurities, dreams and hopes. This novel would be a great read for a day at the beach, or to take along on a vacation.

3.0 out of 5 stars Grand Avenue, May 9 2002

I would give Grand Avenue a 4 for being a page turner, but by the time I read the last page and had closure on the story, I can only give it a 3.5

Fielding does a great job of painting the profiles of each of the "Grand Dames" Chris, Barbara, Susan & Vicki. We get to know each friend, her strengths and weaknesses, her role in the dynamics of this circle of friends. The first chapter of the novel sets the reader up for suspense, not letting us know who the narrator is, and blantantly telling us, that amongst this close-knit group of women, 2 will die-one horribly, and one will betray, is not really a friend at all.

As the pages progress, Fielding takes the reader around many twists and turns, helping us to learn the characters even more and getting the mind reeling as to what will happen to fulfill the destiny we are told from the beginning. The character development is excellent, and the twists and turns highly entertaining, but I felt the ending was a let down and somewhat out of tune with most of the novel. The conclusions wrapped up a bit too quickly and were not quite convincing enough. It was a page turner, and a fun read-would make a great beach read.
