A worthwhile read............., Fév 8 2008
This book slowly draws you in, the tedium of the far north aptly reflected in the writing. The intrigue of the north and its harsh climate, its flora and fauna is captivating, provided you possess a secret admiration for the likes of Farley Mowat and perhaps a secret desire to trek, to explore the unknown, and to be self-reliant. The setting-Yellowknife and the barrens to the northwest acts like a magnet for the seemingly troubled characters who come from elsewhere to find themselves and who leave changed forever. The man vs. self and man vs. nature themes carry this book.
You won't be sorry you read this one!

Nice try, but no prize., Fév 12 2008
I find it hard to believe that this book was considered Giller Prize material. On its very first page, it has a character utter a line of dialogue something like, "It was the parting shot of our erstwhile manager." Nobody speaks like that in real life, and the book is littered with stilted dialogue and poorly conceived metaphors. (Sample: The radio announce booth at night is a "dark tent that covered her up as she crossed the wide desert of late-night radio." (p. 82) Have you ever tried crossing a desert covered up in a tent?)
The book's middle section -- a description of a trip into the Barrens of Canada's north -- is absolutely magnificent, and almost makes up for its mediocre first half, and unforgiveably bad conclusion. (Sample dialogue, uttered over the phone by a woman trying to seduce an old friend she hasn't spoken to in a year: "Harry, when are you coming into my bed?")
Altogether, a good effort, though one hopes not the best book Canada had to offer in 2007.

Familiar, Janv. 26 2008
I was two thirds of the way through the book before it picked up and even then it was predictable. This is a tired story that's been done before. I had to force myself to finish it.
She has some lovely thoughts at the end about the human condition but her characterization is less than fresh. Setting the book in Yellowknife could not revive this one. I can't believe it won the Giller.

Mrs. Q: Book Addict : Visit my blog for newest reviews., Janv. 26 2008
I really didn't enjoy the book. I had high expectations, and I felt that the plot didn't go anywhere. It was not what I expected. It was too hard to get into, and the pace was too slow. I could not relate to any character. I thought the topic sounded really interesting, but it isn't a book i'd recommend.

Giller Prize ??, Juil 4 2008
How this book could have won the "ScotiaBankCorporateLabelOfTheYear" Giller Prize is beyond me. Am I supposed to sympathize with any of these characters? Or is the point of the novel to make me despise them, two dimensional card board cutouts, all equally? The prose is overblown and just made me cringe. Occasional nice bits of imagery and a certain feel for the north didn't do enough to overcome the cringe-worthiness of this endeavour. Story telling? God no, a collection of emotions spread out over many, many pages.
Maybe it won the prize for the title? Late Nights on Air. Good title.
I'm giving it one star because it won the Giller Prize, and didn't deserve it. Oh yeah, and because I hated it. I picked up Oil! by Upton Sinclair immediately after throwing this down and was blown away by the quality of the story telling compared to Late Nights on Air.

Late Night Reading, Déc 13 2007
Mesmerizing is the word I would use to describe Elizabeth Hay's prize winning "Late Nights On Air" Descriptions of the tundra, the vastness, icy cold winds, teeny, tiny wild flowers are simply captivating. The characters, especially our hero Harry, and the mysterious Dido are very believeable. In fact, by the end of the 364 pages, I was a little in love with Harry Boyd myself. I recommend you stay up all night and read this powerful book, pausing every once in a while to gaze up at the stars.

Worthy of the Giller Prize, Mars 16 2008
Late Nights on Air is a beautiful book to read. I enjoyed the descriptive language that Hay uses to describe the wilderness of the north. The story of the characters is complex yet also representative of many workplace friendships and their evolution over time. The author hints in the early pages of the book of a tragedy that will occur. This leaves the reader looking for what is likely to unfold as the group of friends takes an historic journey. The ebb and flow of the lyrical language provides a rewarding literary read. Truly worthy of its recent Giller Prize win, this book is well worth the time spent enjoying its pages

Great read, Déc 25 2007
This is so good that I want to run out and buy a copy for everybody I know. Although the book is set in the 1970's, the story line about the impact of the gas pipeline on the aboriginals in the far north is still so relevant today. A must read.

Late nights on air, Déc 28 2008
Not worthy a prize, poorly styled and due to that misses the message of the book. A waste of time
It is a pity that the Giller prize commitee can not do better on their choises.
