Highly Overrated,
By A Customer
This review is from: Access 2000 Developer's Handbook Set (Paperback)
I purchased this 2 book set in hopes of advancing my knowledge of Access and VBA. I could not find any useful information on functions such as DateAdd, DatePart, Nz, DLookup, DSum, DCount, etc. These are major parts of Access and are very useful once you learn them, but the Developers Handbook does not even cover these functions and how to use them. Or if it does, you can't find out where by searching the index. I've yet to find any information I'm looking for in these books.

It has already been said, Simply the best! I'm finding more and more Web sites/threaded discussions using or pointing to the code found in the Access Developer's Handbook and VBA Developer's Handbook. The ShellBrowse functions alone to be extremely helpful. Thanks to Ken, Paul, and Mike

I am a software developer and have been in business since 1982. I have never gotten more bank for my buck than with these books. I didn't think Access was worth a flip for program development until I bought these books. I have since developed a vertical market package for the seafood industry that sells itself by demo. Thanks Ken, Paul and Mike.

These guys are the best! It's extremely rare to not find the answer to an Access question in one of these two volumes.

A little thick, but gets the job done,

A novice may have difficulty navigating this book, but once you get a basic understanding of Access2k and development with Access2k, this book becomes an invaluable resource. Still, a little dry. Reading through some of the examples is a tedious affair, but the enormous wealth of information provided by the book makes up for that shortcoming. Not for newcomers, and i'm also tempted to say the book's not for intermediate-level Access users. But if you've got the experience and you need the information, this book is the unqualified resource for Access development.

Meilleur livre sur Access avancé,

This review is from: Access 2000 Developer's Handbook Set (Paperback)
Merci!

The best computer books for your money,

In 7+ years of VB/VBA development, I have purchased many, many reference books. Most of them have been very helpful. The Access 2000 Developer's Handbook 2 Volumn Set surpasses all others in terms of width, breadth, and depth of information (as well as in sheer weight). Many development reference books contain CDs with freebies, code examples, etc. The CD in Volume 1 is the first one from which I have ever cut and paste code. The pop-up calendar in Chapter 8 and the CommonDlg class in Chapter 17 were most helpful. As stated in other reviews, these books are really for advanced developers and they are relatively expensive, but they literally paid for themselves the first time I opened them up for help.

Get Access 97 if you can,

Don't get me wrong, I live by their books. Only complain I have is that in Access 2000, they sort of lost the magic. Access 97 was inspirational for me. They show you how to do things. Unfortunately in 2000 and on, they rely on class module. Import this into you project and voila, you don't have to know how it works. I like to write my own codes, and would rather have them show me how its done.

An example of the very best in technical writing,

This review is from: Access 2000 Developer's Handbook Set (Paperback)
I have had many editions of this book, and these guys are true craftsmen. Every edition is better than the prior edition. They are thorough and very thoughtful about real-world needs. These books are an example of the very best in technical writing. As an Access Developer for the last seven years, I am very appreciative to them to have these wonderful resources available.

Just gets better and better,
By Clark Ritchie (Pgh, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Access 2000 Developer's Handbook Set (Paperback)
I learned with the Access 95-97 sets. Unbelievable how reader friendly these guys present things. Each new version just gets better and better. The authors' abilities to create an overall level of understanding is great - they go the extra step to not only tell how to do things at a basic, very understandable level, but why things work the way they do and how they relate to other facets as well. They do it in a way that is not boring. The tools alone are an unbelievable wealth of resources. It is obvious they have worked hard to improve their product with each new version. This is not just a run of the mill basic how to book that never gets beyond ground level - it takes one to a higher level of competency that most books never attempt to address. It's all one needs. |
