This one was a hoot!!! The graboids have changed are even nastier than before. Earl is his usual grouchy self and Bert Gummer is excellent as the ever ready survivalist. You gotta see it!! My kids and I have watched it so often that they know the words and say them along with the actors!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Graboids down south, Jun 6 2009

This review is from: Tremors 2: Aftershocks (Widescreen) (DVD)
As a rule, most sequels are just terrible, poorly-written retreads of the original movie.

Thankfully, "Tremors 2" Aftershocks" is a rather different beastie -- especially since it introduces a rather different beastie, rather than just having "frantic townspeople run from graboids... again." It's a rollicking, mildly absurd adventure story that retains the style and comedic horror of the first movie, but throws some new twists (and sidekicks, and love interests) into the mix.

Six years after the graboid attacks, Earl Basset (Fred Ward) is grumpy, embittered, alone, and raising ostriches. He's especially upset because he believes that he got his big chance and blew it.

But when a Mexican oil rep appears asking for his expert help, a dorky taxi driver named Grady (Christopher Gartin) convinces Earl to go graboid-hunting once more (for $50,000 per dead worm), in the oil fields of Mexico. Earl and Grady successfully destroy several graboids using dynamite and little toy trucks, although they end up having to call for the help of BUrt Gummer (Michael Gross) who is depressed about his marriage falling apart. A little wholesale destruction is just what he needs.

Then Earl and Grady encounter a newly transformed breed of graboid -- heat-sensing, two-legged "shriekers," which have destroyed all the cars and communications equipment in the area. Archaeologist Kate Reilly (Helen Shaver) also discovers that the shriekers are capable of reproducing at freakish speed when they eat. And after chowing down on BUrt's survivalist food, the four humans find themselves corner by horrible little beasties that are as tenacious as graboids... but much more mobile.

"Tremors 2: Aftershocks" has something few sequels have: a great balance of old (graboid hunting, Earl Basset) and new (shriekers, Mexico!), with the same kind of humour and orange splattergore that the first movie had. It also has a brilliant idea that keeps the graboids from getting boring -- they split open and reproduce into horrible little two-legged monsters that "see" body heat. Wonderful twist.

At first the movie seems fairly relaxed, with Earl and Grady blowing up worms from under their little girly umbrellas and exchanging one-liners ("Must be sick." "Probably ate someone that didn't agree with it"). Occasionally they get into rather comic trouble, such as when a graboid with a working radio (a giant carnivorous worm with its own country-western theme song!) snags their pickup's chain and drags them halfway across Mexico.

And it gets wonderfully over-the-top when Burt arrives with enough guns and explosives to level a small Middle-Eastern country. Then like the graboids, it mutates. Cue frenetic chases, lots of hiding, clever seat-of-their-pants tactics, and very fun dialogue ("A friend of ours, Walter Chang. He named them... then they ate him"), all without an ounce of pretension.

Though Earl is a bit grumpier this time around, Ward plays him as a good-hearted curmudgeon who's had some bad luck, but unexpectedly gets a chance to turn it around, while Shaver makes an smart, capable love interest who reopens his interest in real life. Gartin is perhaps the only flaw, since his graboid groupie is over-the-top flaky and perky much of the time.

And Michael Gross deserves special shout-outs for the ever gung-ho Burt Gummer, who not only has some of the best lines in the movie ("I am COMPLETELY out of ammo. That's never happened to me before") but makes Burt a real person rather than a gun-toting caricature ("She said I couldn't handle life without the threat of global war... what kind of thing is that to say to a man?").

"Tremors 2: Aftershocks" is a rarity in that it's a solid, fun horror/comedy in its own right, rather than just rerunning the first movie with different actors. Excellent twist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Return of the Graboids, May 18 2004

I watched a number of movies this past weekend. Among them was Tremors 2: Aftershocks. Fred Ward and Michael Gross are back together but Kevin Bacon is absent. The graboids are back and terrorizing Mexico. Fred is hired to hunt them down. For fifty thou per dead worm Fred can't turn them down.

Things go pretty smoothly at first but graboids can get smart pretty quick. After the elimination of most of the worms something new happens and the next thing you know it's a whole new ball game and Fred and company will be hard pressed just to survive.

If you enjoyed the first movie you will probably like this one. The worm effects are not quite as good (the tongues aren't right) but the original mix of humor and horror is back. Fred even has a new sidekick in Christopher Gartin who has a tendency to look like Kevin Bacon at times. This video (and a lot of others) is available at the Hyde Park Video Good Guys located on 55th near the Shoreland.

The squel to the orginal lower death count but still a good game. Earl is called by some mexican to eleimnated some grab boids that hve have killed some workers. Aparently the did not kill all of them in the first one.

Unlike the firts tremors the ending was not altered. The ending you she on Tremors when Grady kis the hot college student was not the original endeding. At one of the thetherical showings of the movie near the end of the film some people in the theather started chanted kiss her out loud. So they they went back and redited the ending and changed it.

Tremors two I think was supposed to be a gremlins rip of. The Graboids metamorphise into these small vicious creatures. The citizens of perfection name shriekers. Due to the loud scream they produce before they charge.

The shrieker like the graboids has no eyes or ears. It has a heat seeker withc detects the heat from living animals. So it;s a rip of the predator series as well. Earl Basod returns so do Burt. Burt is in all of the Tremors movies with the exception of Tremors 4.

If you like This she tremonrs 1 3 and 4. I also recomend seeing the Dune series which I thinnk tremors is based on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Light-hearted, silly fun, April 17 2004
This review is from: Tremors 2: Aftershocks (Widescreen) (DVD)
The Graboids are back and this time their terrorising a Mexican oil refinery. Depressed and bored with the fact that he was the only one who didn't make money from his experiences in the first film, Earl Bassett quits his ostrich farm in Nevada and heads south to stomp out the Graboids with the help of new recruit Grady Hoover.

When they get there however, they discover that the Graboid is only the first stage in the creature's development and soon they are facing something much more dangerous. Burt Gummer comes to the rescue with a truckload of guns and explosives. Cue lots of blowing up and loads of Graboid guts.

Tremors 2 has a silly, sarcastic sense of humor and a fast pace. There's not one minute of boredom and Fred Ward plays the cantankerous, irritable Earl very well. You'll hardly be missing Kevin Bacon.

The DVD presents the film in a sadly non-anamorphic 1.78:1 transfer. The picture is passable but is not impressive. The sound is Dolby 2.0 and it's no more than average with decent spaciousness and fidelity. A trailer is also included.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Tremors Movie Ever., Jan 12 2004
By
This review is from: Tremors 2: Aftershocks (Widescreen) (DVD)
Lets see, where to begin on this disasterpiece? For one thing, the acting on this film is pretty bad and seems to reek of B-Movieness. Actually, now that I think of it, everything in this movie is pretty average, except there is one thing in this movie that is extremely stupid/annoying: The way the tremors look, act, and move.

In case any of you that are reading this haven't seen the movie, I will now describe what the tremors look like. They are short, stupid-looking creatures that looked like they couldn't hurt anyone, let alone kill them. This movie was completely unrealistic and I just couldn't see why anyone would be afraid of those things. It's the film-makers job to make the creatures look scary, but they've obviously failed in that aspect. I know this really doesn't sound like very big of a deal, but the whole movie was just ruined for me because of this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tremors 2- Aftershocks. Good film., April 17 2003
By
G Gilbert (London, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tremors 2: Aftershocks (Widescreen) (DVD)
Tremors 2 contains all the action, comedy and thrills that are a key feature of the tremors series.
For those uninitiated with the film, Tremors 2 is the story of how the evil graboids (giant, mutant worms) have returned, this time to Mexico. Worried about the consequences, the Mexican government have called out famous graboid killers, Earl Bassett (played with some gusto by Fred Ward of the original), and his new friend, Grady Hoover (Christopher Gartin), to clear up the mess by any means necessary. They enlist the help of Bert Gummer (Michael Gross) to track them down. But this time, the graboids have new suprises in store for the trio.
The graboids are back again to the film, as nasty, ugly and brutal as ever. But this time, something very unexpected happens in the venture...
The thrill factor of Tremors 2 is very high, and it is wothout a doubt a cracking movie, and deserves a place in any collection of DVD'S or videos. Tremors 2 produces at least as many shocks as the original, and the cast are likeable and game, and the movie retains the same spirit of fun and tongue-in-cheek attitude of the original tremors. This film, happily, shows no signs of sequelitis, and can be considered a very good film in it's own right. Some of the scenes in Tremors 2 have very high shock value, and there are several scenes i can think of that really make you jump first time round. These qualities make Tremors a great horror movie, and the spirit of fun means it provides laughs too. And, unusually for a film of this nature, the acting is pretty good.
The cast make for some good dialogue in the film, and although the film can be very gory in places it never becomes so nasty that it loses its appeal, and keeps sticking to shocks rather than a full-on killing frenzy. There are some very interesting plot twists too, and some stuff that you really don't expect happens. I warn you, this is a film that shocks and surprises equally for good measure. A great and enjoyable movie, and this deserves a place in anyone's collection. Unique in the fact that even people who may not traditionally like the genre will probably like this film.
In comparision to the first tremors, i'd say it's a very close run thing as to which is the better film, but for me, tremors 1 scrapes it just. But don't let that put you off, this is a very enjoyable movie.
