5.0 out of 5 stars Air America
If you enjoy Mel Gibson before he went a little crazy this is a great movie to see. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did

3.0 out of 5 stars A caveat about this movie.
The movie is great but the tape is recorded in SLP which means very poor picture quality and resolution. Keep that in mind if you buy this movie. Once the box is open it's yours regardless of the poor video quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Jun 30 2002

This movie is great. A good story, great acting, lots of adventure and comedy, and some touching moments of reflection. Note: There was a real Air America type of thing during the Vietnam war, but this is just a fun and interesting movie. Some interesting social commentary as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars don't bother me while im colorin!!!, Jun 7 2002
Air America was the United States "airforce" stationed in Laos
during the Vietnam war aiding our allies (amongst other things)
Mel Gibson plays veteran air american Gene Ryback and Robert Downey plays Billy Covington the FNG to the outfit.(He ends up being recruited in the states by a fast talking agent of the CIA after he (Downey) is grounded for being an...in the air.
The Film explores the adventures and antics..or hi-jinks as the pencil necked air america geek notes of t he pilots. Which includes drunken whorehouse parties, target practice with silencers on a miniature golf course and my favorite, gun running and landing an aircraft on a mountain.
A serio-comic movie it delivers the goods and was is enjoyable to watch
Thumbs up^

I think that this movie is very entertaining.Mel and Robert are really funny. I've seen this movie for the first time a long time ago on television. After reading few editorial reviews about picture quality I bought this dvd , they rated it 5 out of 5. I thought .. they are specialists in that subject. I was wrong . Picture quality in that movie isn't that good as they write. The most important thing is that colors are not bright at all and image isn't sharp.Sound quality is OK as for Dolby Surround track. If you love that movie buy it otherwise wait for another dvd release of that film.

Directed by Roger Spottiswoode (The Best of Times, The Sixth Day, Terror Train) made This winning underrated comedy was a Box Ofiice Hit in the Summer of 1990. 4.0 out of 5 stars Better sold as aviation humor, April 2 2001

I think the only reason I bought this movie once a long time ago was because I thought it would be neat to see Mel Gibson in an aviation flick. Although the story was a little weak and almost predictable it was still enjoyable. Most of the really funny stuff comes from the aviation humor packed into it, especially the hillside landing with the Dornier TurboPorter. Ever since seeing that I've wanted to see behind-the-scenes footage of the making of all these landings (or crash landings in most cases). Don't buy it if you're looking for a great addition to your collection, buy it if you have a little bit of knowledge on flying.

2.0 out of 5 stars Messy Air, Jan 5 2001

It starts off pretty well, then decides it doesn't want to be a Mash type of film but wants to be a big buddy buddy action flick. Yet it's not that either.

It winds up being a mess of uninspired satire, that has Mel Gibson spouting off a series of trying too hard to be funny one liners .

The story is about the CIA's secret drug smuggling for cooperation and arms in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam war. It can never decide if it's just a glib buddy buddy action film or satire with an edge and winds up being a crass over-produced failure. Robert Downey Jr. is enjoyable for a while but no one is given anything resembling a real character to play. And the parade of stereotypical characters, ethnic insults and missed opportunities becomes numbing after a while.

Chris Jarmick, Author of The Glass Cocoon with Serena F. Holder Available End of January 2001....

2.0 out of 5 stars So-So, Dec 16 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Air America (VHS Tape)
Overall the movie had a bit of a cheesy quality, but the banter between Robert Downey Jr. and Mel Gibson is pretty good. Don't go out of your way to rent this unless you are a diehard fan of either star. I went out of my way to see it simply because I can't resist the boyish, irresistable charm of Robert Downey Jr. In that respect, I wasn't disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best depiction of Asian airdrop/STOL air landing, Oct 11 2000
By
This review is from: Air America (VHS Tape)
This is a movie about air delivery: airdrop by parachutes, and amazing short field landings by STOL aircraft like the amazing Pilatus TurboPorter and the larger C-123. If you like Airborne things, this movie is for you, its funny and upbeat compared to your typical Vietnam movie and in a way does greater honor to the courage of the pilots who lived on the edge while flying these hairy missions. The TurboPorter landing on the side of the mountain makes the whole movie worthwhile...add to it '60s music and sexy Nancy Travis, what more do you want?

I find this movie far more interesting than the Lethal Weapon series, so it soars in my book as one of Mel Gibson's best movies.
