5.0 out of 5 stars Best of four
Without question, the Invoker is the best of the four Lawson Vampire novels written by Jon Merz. The things I particularly liked about it were the attention to details, historical settings, and backstory. Tons of backstory, which for me, helps to flesh out the universe in which the characters interact.

3.0 out of 5 stars Boy book
If this was a movie, I would call it a guy flick. A lot of blood and gore and of course the beautiful girl want's to jump the lead characters bones--only to get huffy when her needs are not met. The lead character is cast as not all that good looking, but buff and cool. I mean, do I really need to go on. Like I said guy flick, guy flick, and did I mention guy flick...

It's doable as an easy read, but the editing mistakes could drive you batty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, Dec 4 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Invoker (Mass Market Paperback)
Look, this series is just amazing. Never before have I seen a spin on vampires like this. Usually, the books are full of drippy ambiguously sexual idiots who hang around Goth bars and wax poetic about the glorious undead life. Yuk! Thank god Merz has come along to put some real punch into the vampire subgenre. What amazes me most is how unknown this series is still. These are incredible books and the action and pacing are top notch. Think Elmore Leonard dialog mixed with the relentless pacing of the best spy novels, combined with some of the wittiest dark humor I've ever read, and it's just skimming the surface of what you'll find reading Merz's work. I gave this 5 stars because it truly deserves it. I hope Merz is writing the Lawson books for years to come. He's one of the best new writers working today and more people need to read him.

1.0 out of 5 stars I'd like to revoke "The Invoker"., Nov 27 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Invoker (Mass Market Paperback)
Merz writes for a third grade audience. His characters are silly, his writing is unpolished, the storyline is lame, and this modern-day vampire culture, with its' bottle of blood in the frig foolishness is just plain dumb. Half was all I could read, before throwing it down.

I don't expect Dickens when I read pulp fiction, but I do expect storytelling a little more literate than a comic book.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Great Stuff from Jon F. Merz!, Oct 27 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Invoker (Mass Market Paperback)
After reading THE FIXER, the first of the Lawson Vampire Series, I couldn't wait to read the second installment. Merz doesn't disappoint. He has a gift for fast-paced, exciting storytelling and an ear for snappy dialogue that make reading him a real treat. The third book of the series, THE DESTRUCTOR, is on my nightstand as we speak. I'm ready for another fun ride!

Warning: This book (and the rest of the Lawson series) are too good. If you read it, everything else you read will pale in comparison and you will never be satisfied with mere pulp again.
This is premium stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just another vampire story!, May 31 2003

This review is from: Invoker (Mass Market Paperback)
I picked up The Invoker on a mission to find something different to read. I was not familiar with Mr. Merz's work but the premise and cover art were enough to convince me to give it a read. I am now very glad I did. I love vampire stories but was getting tired of reading the same old story where only the names change. The Invoker is the type of story that appeals to a wide range of tastes. There is action, sure, but depth as well. Jon Merz makes you care about the characters in the book, something not so easy to do in a contemporary horror/action novel. The vampires are not your run of the mill "insert villain here" types and the secret society they are governed by sometimes seems frighteningly all too familiar (secret service...C.I.A.). The Invoker has action, intrigue, emotion and best of all a story! Anyone looking for a new hero and a well written read should spend a few hours getting to know Lawson and his creator Jon Merz!

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it!, May 23 2003

I really enjoyed The Fixer, and this 2nd book about Lawson is great and continues what I hope will be a long series! Jon writes believable, flowing dialogue with just the right amount of humor, sarcasm, wit, feelings and excitement. Lawson is a character you can care about, respect and ultimately want to learn even more about.
