5.0 out of 5 stars Very Very Good
I have read many of Mark Anthony's books and I think this one of his better ones, the end was kind of "ok" I think it would have been better if it had gone in a different direction. but hey, it was good all the same.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a true reflection of Mark Anthony's literary talent
I really enjoyed the beginning of the book and the manner in which the reader is thrown headlong into the hustle and bustle of the Forgotten Realms world. I was however quite peeved to find that the characters featured in the prologue weren't the protagonists of the story. 2.0 out of 5 stars I have read better, Sep 18 2001

I am a big fan of the Forgotten Realms and I have read most of the published novels and found the majority to be worth reading, but this particular novel was a little tiresome.

The story revolves around an accused thief who is given a second chance at life if he will find a certain noble who got lost in Undermountain. Artek The Knife is the thief's name and being boring is his game. Artek is half-orc on his father's side and this is the only interesting thing about him. The other characters fall short in most respects, except for Muragh the talking skull and Guss the Gargoyle. Muragh provides comic relief in the story and Guss shows great bravery. The noble and Beckla the mage are not that fascinating.

I believe if the characters were more developed this would have been a better read, but they were not and this is not.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to the Forgotten Realms saga, Jun 13 2000

Mark Anthony has written an exciting chapter in the Forgotten Realms saga. The story of a thief who agrees to find a lost noble in the multi-level dungeon/labyrinth is one full of magic, monsters and mayhem. Once the character thinks he's found a way out of Undermountain, he's faced with a new set of obstacles.

This one will keep diehard readers of fantasy novels and new readers of fantasy novels entertained for hours. Of all the novels in the The Nobels series, this one is the best.

Also recommended is "Crypt of the Shadowking", a novel in The Harpers series, by the same author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging story and good resource., Nov 3 1998

This review is from: ESCAPE FROM UNDERMOUNTAIN (Mass Market Paperback)
The storyline of this novel is a typical dungeoncrawl though engagingly written and well executed. The characters are given an unusual depth, especially Artek. Mr. Anthony has done a good job in portraying the wonder and horror of Undermountain. I consider this novel an excellent source for ideas and inspiration in my own campaign construction.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, Oct 2 1998

Although I'm really a big fan of R.A. Salvatore's work, Mark Anthony really deserves a lot of praise for this book. The characters were some of the best that I've ever seen. Artek was great, and his bloodline made him that much more intresting. Beckla was also good, for she opened up a whole new perspective on mages. Even though Guss was introduced later in the story, his image of a good gargoyle was great. Muragh was a riot, filling in the comic relief that every good book needs. Lord Dairen Thal, even though his apperances were short, made a great villan. Last, but certinaly not least was Corin, the wuss of the party. His development from being a pampered dope to a confident fighter and leader was fantastic. The book had the perfect balance of fighting, emotion, and mystery. In my opinion, it's one of the best Forgotten Realms books out there. A must read for any fan.

I really enjoyed the beginning of the book and the manner in which the reader is thrown headlong into the hustle and bustle of the Forgotten Realms world. I was however quite peeved to find that the characters featured in the prologue weren't the protagonists of the story. I would love to have known what happens with Savras's artifact, especially since it was so close to redemption from the forgotten shrine in Undermountain. The book itself was not as compelling as Mark Anthony's other work and I had the distinct feeling that the storyline had not been planned as well as it could have been. The plot had an ADLIB feel to it which was difficult to dispel. It was nontheless an enjoyable read, but unfortunately did not aspire to anything more than that.
