5.0 out of 5 stars Great Characterization
This is the first book I have ever read in the Dragonlance series and it has whetted my taste for more. The characters in this story were wonderfully fleshed out and there were elements of action, adventure, romance and intrigue enough to satisfy the tastes of any reader. A thoroughly enjoyable and captivating story.

3.0 out of 5 stars strong start, weak ending
I've been a long time fan of the dragonlance series, primarily because the Raistlin and Caramon dichotomy. After the Dragonlance Legends series, I was in awe of the Weis and Hickman tandem. It has been very rare for me to sympathize with, much less admire an evil wizard. But I was disappointed by this book.

The book starts very strongly. We get to see not just Raistlin,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!!, Jun 22 2004

This review is from: The Soulforge: The Raistlin Chronicles, Volume One (Mass Market Paperback)
When I first saw The Soulforge on the shelf at the bookstore..I was a bit skeptical.I read the Chronicles,Legends,The Second Generation,Dragons of Summer Flame, and the War of Souls trilogy, with a few other side books, and I was fascinated with the character Raistlin.I was extremely curious at the hints in the other books referring to his past...but then again I didn`t want him to be messed up.So I waited a little while to read it.I finally caved, and bought the book..read it...and wow!I was amazed. The book is a great book, and because of it,I`m an even bigger fan of Raistlin than I was before. It`s a great book,as well as it`s sequel Brothers in Arms.I personally recommend these books to any Dragonlance fan. They are just great books.I am not going to say anything about what goes on in the book...I don`t want to spoil anything! Good luck to you fellow Dragonlance fans! (great books!)

4.0 out of 5 stars The start of Raislin's life, April 30 2004

This review is from: The Soulforge: The Raistlin Chronicles, Volume One (Mass Market Paperback)
Young Raislin is recruited into a school for magic, and he chooses to practise war magic. This book, the first ina series, deals with Raislin's education, and so it dosn't have as much action as other books (not that it is boring, it isn't). OK, first of all, I am not very familier with the Dragonlance world, but I'm trying too catch up. I thought Raislin is a very spooky character, and I can not wait to see what happenms to him and his twin brother next. I guess if there is a messege to this book, it is absolute power currupts absolutly. I liked this book, and I can not wait to go to the next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting..., April 28 2004
This review is from: The Soulforge: The Raistlin Chronicles, Volume One (Mass Market Paperback)
As a huge Raistlin fan i adored this book. It gives you major insight to Raistlin's past, as well as the past of others. I especially enjoyed learning how they had all met for the first time (Flint, Tanis, Sturm, Tasslehoff etc).
Raistlin makes for a very mysterious and interesting character so pieceing together his enigmatic history from previous books makes for a difficult yet fun task (to me anyway)and though i did enjoy finding out about his past, i would have preferred it if it was not all handed to us on a silver platter.
Again, personally, i would have liked to have read more about his Test. The parts of the book referring to his infamous Test are near the end and lack the thrilling details you would expect.
Overall though, this book is a favourite and i recommend it to any, whether you are a Raistlin fan or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Test Is In This One! Finally!, April 14 2004

Wow! Raistlin fan or not this is a great book. I, of course like most of the people who read DL, like Raistlin but I am not a huge fan per say but I do find him interesting to read. A lot of my question were resolved here not all but many.
Perhaps the best part about this book is that you get to witness the Test that Raistlin endured! You've heard about out for a long time now and finally your in the midst of it all! WOOT!
Three highlights ** Slight Spoilers ** (but not really) :)
1) Meeting all the old friends Cameron, Raistland, Tanis, Tas, Tika, Otik, Flint, Sturm, etc. and learning about them as they met. And watching them make a covenant to return to Solace to meet again...which, i think, brings you to the first book you read...the Dragons of Autum Twilight. (I liked that part)
2) Raistland's Test
3) Raistland's Letter at the end which gives you the reason the book you just finished, The Soulforge, was written. Very creative...I enjoyed that last part greatly.
Way to go! WOOT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, but somewhat ruins..., April 12 2004
By
This review is from: The Soulforge: The Raistlin Chronicles, Volume One (Mass Market Paperback)
Like any Dragonlance book by Weis and/or Hickman, it's a wonderfully written book. I enjoyed every page, and had to keep on reading. I read it again after finishing it, and I still read it every once in a while.
Yet, I feel that this book somewhat ruined Raistlin to me. It was interesting to learn about his childhood and how he became a wizard, yet, it, it was so much more interesting if it wasn't serve on a silver plate to us. I remember how, before reading this book, I spent a lot of time trying to understand Raistlin and build his background, only from the hints found in the "Chronicles" and "Legends". This book had deleted all the question marks, and cleared the mystery of the character. By doing so, I think, it had somewhat diminshed one of the most interesting characters in the world of Fantasy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps you open minded, Sep 4 2003

I've always seen Dragonlance novels and i met a friend that had a stack on his bookshelf. He told me about Raistlin's character, and alittle about the world of Krynn so I bought my own copy. I must say this book drew me into the fantasy genre! If you really want to get to know a powerful character, pick up a copy...and read your eyes out. I bought the sequal "Brothers in Arms" and read it in three days, I couldn't put the book down. Weis and Hickman are unbelievable, nothing boring at all in the Raistlin Chronicles. If it wasn't for these aspiring books i wouldn't be reading George R.R. Martins a song of fire and ice saga.

5.0 out of 5 stars Master of the Past and Present, Aug 19 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Soulforge: The Raistlin Chronicles, Volume One (Mass Market Paperback)
If magic and death are your cup of tea, you must pick this book up. It tells the childhood of the one named Raistlin Majere and he is the master of magic and death. This book really shows the struggles one has to go through in order to become a mage. This book also answers a lot of puzzling questions about Raistlin's childhood and his Test.

If you are even just a bit interested in the world of magic and death, this is a must read.

Thank you Margaret Weis for Raistlin Majere.
