A fun review of monsters, Jan 2 2010
This review is from: A Practical Guide to Monsters (Hardcover)
As with the other "Practical Guides", this book draws heavily on Dungeons and Dragons as its inspiration. Inside the book are a wide range of mythological monsters, as well as some unique to D&D. They are broadly separated into different categories, such as bugs, undead, humanoids, aerial, etc. Each monster has at least half a page, some a full page, and some several pages, in which their physical form, manner, and habitats are described. The illustrations are generally of good quality, and the writing is interesting enough to capture the attention and imagination of children and adolescents. The book generally lacks information on the mythological origins of the creatures, instead dwelling on their ecologies, with advice on weapons and equipment for facing them (there are three 2-page sections dealing with the latter). Some of the monsters are quite scary, particularly the undead, so very young children might be scared. Generally though, the book is well-written and well-suited to entertaining those interested in reading about monsters without having to worry about either silly childish interpretations, dry historical references, or R-rated gore. With dozens of different monsters covered in this book, it's likely that most readers will find at least a few that tickle their imaginations. A good book.
