This review is from: A Practical Guide to Dragon Riding (Hardcover)
This book really is a sequel to the "Practical Guide to Dragons". The first third of the book is devoted to finding a dragon partner for riding, with much of it describing how to care for dragon eggs and young. The really dangerous bit about how to obtain those eggs is only briefly covered. The next third of the book details how to train a dragon, and what some aerial maneuvers are. For those familiar with modern day air-to-air combat (i.e., fighter combat), this will be quite familiar reading. It's an interesting application to dragons, although I think it's almost too technical for most younger readers. The last third of the book (which is longest section) deals with magic items created from dragon parts as well as new kinds of dragons (including a whole host of undead dragons). I found this last bit a little silly, but the younger readers I read it to enjoyed the new kinds of dragons. The standard of writing is again a little out of synch with the target audience, as it can be rather verbose when simpler words could do. The drawings are nice (although again, a touch too much "modern" fantasy for my tastes), and they generally serve to illustrate the book quite nicely.

As a follow-up book to the Practical Guide to Dragons, this book does a very good job. As a book about Dragon Riding, it's a little weak on its own. With that in mind, I think it's a fun book for those who are interested in dragons, and quite suitable for younger (6-14) readers.
