new format, basically same old stuff, misleading length, Mar 3 2013
This review is from: Apostolic Fathers, The: Greek Texts and English Translations (Hardcover)
This is a very useful book to acquire if someone is just starting out to read the apostolic fathers - I have no real substantial complaints about it as Holmes is a careful editor -, but if you already own Holmes' 1999 edition, there will not be that much new material for you even though this third edition (2007) is about 825 pages versus the second edition (1999) 635 pages. So how come there is a 190 page difference? Well it not because of significantly more new material that has been added (for which I was hoping to read), rather it is because the physical limits of the book have changed, that is less text per page because the pages are smaller! Yes, the book is more convenient to use than the paperback 1999 edition, but if you own that and are happy with using it save your money and take a pass on this edition. If I had to do this again I would not buy the 2007 hardback edition and stick with the 1999 edition. This reminds me of a caveat I was once told. The best book to buy is the one which you have already read, since you will be really sure that you actually want it.

This review is from: Apostolic Fathers, The: Greek Texts and English Translations (Hardcover)
Excellent book for anyone seeking to have insight of the life of the early church. Personally, the letters of Ignatius really gave me a renewed passion for the Lord and renewed fervor. Good book to read for anyone seeking to follow Jesus Christ.

I useful book for a great price., Feb 1 2010
This review is from: Apostolic Fathers, The: Greek Texts and English Translations (Hardcover)
I use this book alot. It is the best translation out there. Micheal Holmes does a great justice to the outdated translation of Lightfoot. A must have for any biblical scholar or lay person with an ache inside for studying the early church.
