Actors advice,
By A Customer
This review is from: Audition (Mass Market Paperback)
I highly recommend this book in our quest for the great parts as actors. I also recommend: Voice Lessons to Go by Vaccarino- a cheap way to get your singing lessons taken care of, because we've all had to sing at some audition, The Artsts Way by Cameron- a 12 week program to help you really focus and baby your creativity and abilities, Back Stage West- You've got to have it for audition info, and lots of great friends to support you through all the madness!

The One and Only Book You'll Ever Need to Learn a Craft,
By truefeather77 "truefeather77" (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Audition (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a fantastic book -- simple, powerful, effective. I studied with the author in person, in a series of classes one summer in Manhattan, and I have never *seen* such powerful work coming from actors -- in class or anywhere else. He's an amazing teacher, and absolutely none of it is diluted in this book. It will change the way you look at acting for the rest of your life. Craft puts power in the hands of the actor. Michael Shurtleff started out as a casting director, and discovered some of the most revered names you know. He teaches you to be an *actor*, not just a reactor.

Jam-packed with useful insights, advice and anecdotes!,

For me, this book completely eliminated all the mysteries surrounding auditions, but the book also serves as an important guide for actors to interpret scripts and bring new and complex things into their performances. We also get to read some really entertaining and informative stories about how such stars as Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Ben Vereen, and Robert DeNiro got their starts. Definitely the sort of book to be re-read many times! I would also say that it is an outstanding book to use in class or independent study, for ANYONE involved with drama or film!

kick ass book,

This review is from: Audition (Mass Market Paperback)
this book is one of the best i've read on the subject of acting. that's because it actually discusses acting and the auditioning process (not how to find an agent and further ones career)it focuses on the craft, not the career. also shurtloff includes interesting and sometimes comical antedotes from his career and the careers of other succesful people in show business(such as barbara streisand and deniro)in these stories he talks about mistakes he's made as well as strategies which worked effectively. there are also sections which show how to break down a scene and properly analyze whats going on. he does this buy showing conversations betweeen teachers and auditioners with actors. you should definatley by this book if you want to read something interesting that doesnt tell you the best way to find an apt in LA, good luck

The main thing and just the best in this book are the 12 Guideposts. They will help the actor enormous, to work on the figure, to make the role authentic and interesting. The practical applications, when he writes about different scenes makes it interesting to read thru the 12 principles. You will notice: there is writing an absolute Profi! You will profit not only for auditions, but for every drama, you will play!

Want to get the part? Read "Audition" by Michael Shurtleff/Bob Fosse. Want to see everything wrong with theatre? Watch "Waiting for Guffman" (very funny film). Want to be famous? Are you sure? Read "My Fractured Life" by Rikki Lee Travolta.

Another must-have book for all actors,
By A Customer
This review is from: Audition (Mass Market Paperback)
This is an excellent book for actors. Simply put, it is on of the few book that is a must have. However, if you are serious about making acting a career like I am, then you must also get "Auditioning: An Actor-Friendly Guide." It is packed with information as to what we screw up on in auditions, whether it is our nerves, memory, stage fright,(which could be tied into nerves, depending on your point of view) or other problems we constantly face at that dreaded time. There are strategies inside this Bible for actors that helps us conquer the audition process. It is full of advice from auditors who have years of experience in the field. Their advice has made me learn so much that I am confident I will conquer my next audition. GET THIS BOOK!

It works. It creates actors. It simply works.,
By Brian's Dad (Los Gatos, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Audition (Paperback)
I had no acting experience. None. Not even in school plays.I got into acting on a lark, as a hobby. I had been studying and auditioning for about three years with no success, and very little progress. An instructor recommended this book. I read it, and then read it again. All of a sudden, things that had been drilled in my head during acting classes finally started to make sense. Within the following 6 months, my skills grew in a series of leaps, and I began booking at auditions. Not a lot, not yet. But the sudden increase in my abilities was astounding. I am still not a great actor. But this book helped me get out of the "student" mode and into the "working" mode. Well worth it.
