say goodnight to insomnia,
This review is from: Say Good Night to Insomnia: The Six-Week, Drug-Free Program Developed At Harvard Medical School (Paperback)
I was averaging 3hrs of sleep /night. I tried the jeffery thompson cd. Nothing worked.I got "say goodnight to insomnia", and I follow the advice religiously. The first week, especially the first few days were brutal, but gradually, I started sleeping better. I am now sleeping about 7 hours with no wakeup. It takes me about 5 minutes to sleep until. And that I do till the 7am alarm. Bottom line - if you follow the book religiously, it works.

This book is wonderful--I finished it in 2 days! It is a very easy-to-read explanation of the physiology of sleep, why we lose it, and how we can get it back. The techniques Dr. Jacobs describes to stop insomnia are easy to follow (although they do take patience and persistence) and really make sense. And, best of all, this program works!!! I suffered from insomnia for over 16 years, and I never thought I would be free of endless days and nights worrying about sleep. To my amazement, the night following the day I started reading the book, I fell asleep within 10 minutes! Unheard of for me! And, I wasn't even employing any of the techniques suggested in the book yet. I whole-heartedly recommend this book to all insomniacs who suffer from constant anxiety about sleeping as I did, and wish you endless nights of restful sleep!

Not most recent version,
This review is from: Say Good Night to Insomnia: The Six-Week, Drug-Free Program Developed At Harvard Medical School (Paperback)
Although a great book, this version is not the most recent edition. The newer version has more up to date information on the various medications available and I would highly suggest searching for it.

The writing style Gregg Jacobs uses is friendly and enjoyable to read. It is full of well researched, up to date, scientific information, but does not read like a textbook. The case studies are very relate-able and there is much emphasis on positivity and personal power. The key concept is using Cognitive Behavioral techniques to reprogram one's beliefs concerning sleep; and believing in one's own ability to overcome insomnia using the mind and personal strength.Jacobs covers a full range of insomnia related issues and gives step by step suggestions that are easily applicable. My insomnia is not cured by any means, but it is better than it has been in almost a year, and continues to improve as I employ and personalize the techniques and guidelines in the book. The reason I didn't give it five stars is because at times I found it a bit too simplistic. For example he seems to often say something along these lines: "All you have to do is such and such, and then your mind will change concerning this and then you will be able to sleep." I think Jacobs is really trying to encourage the reader and stay positive, but the idea is you just read something and then your mind is changed and it's just not as easy as that. If it was we would all be cured of anything in an instant! That said, practice makes perfect and he does remind the reader of this often.

An absolutely amazing book, worth its weight in gold.,
This review is from: Say Good Night to Insomnia: The Six-Week, Drug-Free Program Developed At Harvard Medical School (Paperback)
I've been moderately insomniac ever since I can remember. It's taken me about 2 hours to fall asleep every night since I was a child, with very few exceptions. Infact I basically accepted this as part of my life with no possible alternatives. I would remedy the situation by taking sleep pills, which soon turned into an addiction as I came dependant on them. However, they would leave me mentally crippled the following morning. After only 2 weeks or reading this book I began falling asleep within 30 minutes. I'm now just completing the program, and I'm falling asleep in about 15 - 20 minutes! I have not had the need or desire to take any sleeping pills. And finally, as a result of my increased daily energy I'm now working out again, and my grades in College have improved. I owe it all to this book!

After working the night shift for 3 years I developed a sleep problem that lasted almost a year. I had tried everything from sleeping pills to supplements. This book helped me rid myself of sleep problems once and for all. If you have trouble with sleep I can't recommend this book enough. Thank god for Dr. Gregg D. Jacobs. Every insomniac should read this book and implement these strategies.

I work the midnight shift as a police sergeant. I had never been able to sleep more than a few hours a day, and the situation had horrible prospects. I bought this book out of desperation, and it has changed my life. I went from 3 or 4 hours of sleep a day to 6 or 8 hours. I feel like a human being again. GOD BLESS YOU DR. JACOBS, AND MR. BENSON! THANK-YOU!

I know whereof I speak...this book is the best insomnia guide that I have read. I put the advice to practice and it helped cure my sleep problems. I had even consulted a sleep disorder clinic and yet they did not help me as much as the information in this book. As with all great guides, you must take the action prescribed in order to feel the benefit. Best of all, this program is drug free.

I bought this book out of desperation. It seems that one day I suddenly lost ability to fall asleep. After several weeks spent virtually without sleep, I went to a doctor and got sleep medication, which worked well. However, I was unable to sleep without it and my husband and I wanted to have a second baby. Thus, I knew I would have to get off the medication; but when I tried to sleep without the pill, I couldn't fall asleep.Thank you to all the readers who have recommended this book and helped me choose the right one! As a result of following Dr. Jacobs' advice, I no longer need any medications and have no sleep-related problems. This was a great investment! This book can be helpful to anyone who would like to improve quality (or quantity) of his or her sleep.
