Good book for ideas,

This review is from: Glorious Crocheted Sweaters: More Than Sixty Exquisite Sweaters to Make and Enjoy (Paperback)
This isn't the perfect crochet book as there are items that instruct you to add knitting to (ribbing on sweaters) - but if you figured out the pattern of the sweater, I have faith you'll certainly be able to crochet a rib stitch (hint - it's easy - single crochet in the back first row, the front the second row, attach using a slip stitch to the article you're attaching it to).But this book is more for inspiration - the colors and photographs are lovely, it shows you more about crochet and how it can be manipulated than most crochet books. Crochetrs complain kniiters get all the good patterns and while that may seem true, it isn't in this book. You have to have the necessary perserverance to see the item come to fruition and it's not easy to do that. Even if you don't follow the patterns exactly or just use the book as a springboard for your own items, you'll really see the use of it. But if you see it thru, your rewards will be great - and when somebody asks, "Oh did you knit that?" you can say proudly "No, I _crocheted_it." And when they say "Oh, can you make me one, too?" - well that's for you to decide.

Least favorite book in my pattern library,

There are some interesting concepts and stitches in this book, but the sweaters are out-of-date and are not designed with the comfort of the wearer in mind. In addition, the patterns are difficult to follow. There is no information to help the reader alter the patterns in any way for a better fit. A very experienced crocheter would be able to manipulate these patterns into something lovely, perhaps, but otherwise don't disappoint yourself!

One of the best books I have,

I try to buy anything that Nola Theiss puts out. She has the most wonderful sweater patterns to make up. Since I have crocheted from the age of 12 these were no problem to me to make up. Some of the designs were more detailed than others, but for an intermediate or expert crocheter, these will be no problem at all to master. When you get through with them, you will have a wardrobe that will rival Saks sweater department. I would buy it again!

If you have no clue on how to create a knit rib, you're in trouble.

This book has lots of beautiful and unique sweaters to crochet. Some patterns do have knit neck and sleeve edgings, but I had no problem using crochet for the edgings instead. If you don't ever adapt patterns to suit your own taste and skills, this may not be the book for you. Otherwise, it is wonderful - don't pass it up!

This book requires knitting skills as well as crochet.,

There are great color pictures, and the stitches are all explained carefully, in case there are one or two you're not familiar with. My only concern is that nearly every pattern requires a ribbing knit. If you're unwilling or unable to knit, keep looking. If that's not a problem, this should be great.

If you've ever envied the variety of sweater patterns knitters have to chose from and wished there were more good crocheted patterns out there then this is the book for you. From simple to challenging, every pattern is beautiful. I only wish they went to extra large sizes, but they do go to large. The clear instructions and beautiful color photographs show you all you want to know about a pattern. This is one of the best books out there for crocheted sweaters. |
