My artistic "status" is beginner, with a belief that much is "trainable"; I am "self taught" from books, with a few courses at a local art school for "un-talented" beginners like me (some oil, acrylic, pastel, no water colour training). The traditional and water-colour pencil media attracted me by its non-messy, quick pick up and go possibilities. Drawing and Painting with Colored Pencil: Basic Techniques for Mastering Traditional and Watersoluble Colored Pencils.

I was truly delighted with the results I achieved by following the detailed step by step instructions in the Demonstrations. The book is well organized. All the tips and techniques worked, colour theory and composition are covered. The section on materials is comprehensive, although I found that I did not need to buy every suggested shade of coloured pencil (the section on colour theory helped here). The demonstration subjects were restricted to still life (fruit, vegetables and flowers) and landscapes (includes trees, water and seascapes). It lacked any mention of portrait or figure studies, which is why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars (Pastel users might want to experiment after working through the book.)

I felt encouraged at the end of this "course in a book", and ready to move on to the next step of using reference photos for land scape work. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to explore the use of traditional and water colour pencils.
