5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Stories, Mar 10 2010
This review is from: Serendipity Books Serendipity (Paperback)
The entire Serendipity collection of books are children's storytelling classics. This is the first book in the series and it's the first one I read as a child. As a child I owned this one, Creole, Bangalee and Crabby Gabby, all softcovers and ordered through my school's book order club. These timeless treasures were a great memory from my childhood. I still have the original 4 books I had back then. They are the only kids books I had and didn't get rid of on my way to adulthood. These books are warm, insightful, wise and utterly charming in every way. One of the best series in children's literature. I don't know any child who wouldn't love these books. Great for young and old! Do yourself a favour and get a complete set. You will not be sorry you did!!!

I believe this is the pilot book in the series, and is certainly one of the most classic. Serendipity is in all likelihood a magical elasmosaurus who, after meeting a very special dolphin and walrus, is assigned the most noble task of all...guarding the great seas.
This wonderful book has gorgeous illustrations and I remember back as a child wishing I had it. Now, I finally have it thanks to Amazon (...) I read it and I don't regret that I did. Next to my all time favorites, those starring Squeakers the squirrel, this has become a fave, too. Actually, I think I love them all!

I had nearly all of the Serendipity books when I was a child. I LOVED them, and now I am going to start collecting them for my children that I will have in the future in case for some crazy reason they go out of print. If I remember how mush I loved these as a child, think of how your own children will react. They have a great message, wonderful characters, and beautiful illustrations that are sure to get your childrens imaginations working.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happiness is Discovering Serendipity, July 9 2003

This review is from: Serendipity Books Serendipity (Paperback)
Stephen Cosgrove's 'Serendipity' series teaches kids to deal with everyday situations in the world they live in. It provides them with positive solutions to difficult problems. all the charaters are whimsical and beautifully illustrated. There's lot more of these charming books. Collect all the Serendipity series books. Read them all. Start with this one. They're sure to entertain and teach children some valuable lessons they will remember.

In the first book of the series, 'Serendipity' is the story about a large pink sea monster who discovers she has important work to do as guardian of the seas. The moral is knowing who you really are will bring you happiness. Would I have ever known that a children's book could even teach me the meaning of true happiness. And I've been searching for a long time in lots of wordy adult books. The message is plain and simple. My favorites from the series are: 'Creole' (Don't judge people by the way they look.); 'Dragolin' (Believe in yourself-all things are possible.); 'Leo the Lop' (Being different makes you special because you're you.); Rhubarb (To have a friend you must ba a friend.); 'Wheedle on the Needle' (Cooperation can solve almost any problem.); 'Sooty Foot' (Friends don't take advantage of each other.); 'Jake O'Shawnasey' (If you believe in yourself you can do anything.); and 'Little Mouse on the Prairie' (Laughter makes work much easier.). All of these are guaranteed to give any child a good time in fun and learning. Like the name 'Serendipity' means "a fortunate discoveries by accident." And, these are quite the case.

All I can say about these books is WOW. I remember reading them when I was 5 and 6(yes believe it or not I could read that well at that age) and loving to fall asleep with them so I could dream of unicorns and other creatures. Reading has been my passion my whole life and I have read more books than anyone I know. These take the cake. They are wonderful for the imagination with their beautiful illustrations. They are also wonderful for the soul with their morals and characters that touch you and make you feel you are a part of their world for a little while. I had a very difficult time finding these books until I found Amazon.com. So I send out a resounding "Thank you amazon.com!!!" Buy these books....you will not be dissapointed and your children will thank you. Now and forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories, Mar 10 2003

Growing up as a child, my mother read the "Serendipity" books to me every night. I think my most favorite time as mom and daughter was sitting together reading these books. The pictures are beutiful and the stories teach great lessions that we all experience in our lives at one point or another. I am 24 years old now and I have recently found a few of the books that I loved so much as a child. I now have a child of my own who is 7yrs. old and I have introduced these wonderful stories to him. He and I love to read them together and once in awhile when I am alone will pick one up just to enjoy the fantastic morals in each story. I wish they were easier to come across in stores. (They have become so hard to find) I think Stephen Cosgrove is a fantastic story teller and I rate all of his stories as 5 stars.

Hello to all Serendipity lovers
I have almost completed my collection of I believe at least 77 books from this series. I grew up reading and falling in love with all of the animals from Rhubarb to Fanny to Ming Ling. I encourage any reader (parent or child) to indulge themselves in the gorgeous illustrations and wonderful morals at the end of each story. Cosgrove and James have inspried me to start writing children's books on my own. I might be a famous author someday!

5.0 out of 5 stars Childhood Revisited, Dec 7 2001
By
This review is from: Serendipity Books Serendipity (Paperback)
As a small child, I had the entire collection of these books. They are precious, as they encourage the self-esteem of children and appeal to the child in all of us. The charming creatures and simple moral of each story make them fun, entertaining and constructive. My mother unfortunately got rid of my collection, and I thought I would never find these books again. But here they are, and I intend to reconstruct my collection for my children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Environmentalism and Self-knowledge., July 11 2000

Obviously this book is awesome, so I won't add anymore to what's already been said. However, everyone seems to have missed the environmentalism that the book espouses. Really cool for kids, huh.

Serendipity becomes a guardian of the ocean at the end. She finds her purpose, and it's to protect others in her environment. She finds meaning and purpose (symbolized by her name) in helping others! What a great message!
