5.0 out of 5 stars The Encyclopaedia of Running
This book is the ultimate resource for long distance runners (10 km to 100km)(6 miles to 60 miles.) For those in Canada and US who are unfamiliar with Dr. Tim Noakes, himself an avid runner, he has spent most of his career researching running and sport injuries in South Africa. 3.0 out of 5 stars To much information
This book is really complete... maybe to complete in the sense that their is sometime to much information. If you are a professionnal, you might be looking for so much details and stories. But if you rather like to have the information straight to the point, you might start getting a bit anoyed by reading through 900 pages. We could whish for an abreviated version of this...

This book is the ultimate resource for long distance runners (10 km to 100km)(6 miles to 60 miles.) For those in Canada and US who are unfamiliar with Dr. Tim Noakes, himself an avid runner, he has spent most of his career researching running and sport injuries in South Africa. The program and guidance in this book took me, as with thousands of others, from an overweight non-runner to successful completion of the 88km Comrades marathon in South Africa, in 52 weeks, at age 30.

There are also programs for competitive athletes. Highly recommended for both novices and experts, and written in understandable non-academic style. Very higly recommended. Just be careful on the chapter about carbo-loading. Tim Noakes has subsequently changed his opinion on the benefits of carbo-loading as being dependent on each person's insulin resistance.

Excellent reference for coaches and runners alike, this book belongs in any Athlete's library. Tim Noakes explains various theories and concepts in detail and doesn't just put forth the ones he favours.

I agree that this book is great. It is 900+ pages (slightly repetitive) but includes only a one page table of contents. Needless to say I was a little annoyed. So I wrote this one:

[...]

I also recommend Daniels' Running Formula, Bernadot's Advanced Sports Nutrition, and Bompa's Periodization Training for Sports.
Although with Polar's RS800sd watch (~$600) Daniel's formula is no longer necessary because the watch can give real-time info on your running-efficiency (Vo2 per speed).
