Timber Frame Construction: All About Post and Beam Building

I have bought probably 10 books on timber framing and ended up building my own 2000 sf timber frame barn. I went back to this book more than any other becasue it covers the basics so well.
If you're looking to attempt a fairly straightforward project without any real complex joints or design, this is probably the only book you'll ever need - a great primer and a great basic reference.

" Timber Frame Construction " provides a good basis of knowledge for the expeirenced builder intrested in learning post and beam joinery , from the history of the craft to tools and joints. I found the book a valuable source for my project.

On the down side I could have used more explanation on what joints to use, the best cutting sequence and a greater description of where not to use them.

Overall though I recommend it.

I found this well reviewed book a bit confusing. First is the title: timber frame and post and beam are not the same thing. Timber framing uses no nails, bolts or other hardware whereas post and beam uses hardware extensively. To clarify this book I would get Tedd Benson's Building the Timberframe House and Rob Roy's Timber Framing For The Rest Of Us first to get a good handle on the subject. Still, this is an excellent effort, with some subjects that are given little space in the other two. If you read all 3 then you have an excellent foundation and will be ready to Build The Shed, a chapter in this book that is worth the price alone. [...]; all of these books talk about many tools but not many are needed for the jobs we will typically do in our own timber frame construction. All in all an excellent book by excellent craftsmen, just don't rely on this book alone and you'll be fine. BTW, I am building my own shed, using the chapter in this book and straw bale walls. I'll tell you how that goes when it's done... =)
