this was a Christmas gift and I wish they hadn't bothered--it bored me nearly out of my mind-I find it difficult to believe that people found it funny--I didn't even smile once!! I read in the Star this morning that it's number 1 on the fiction list--I guess there is something very wrong with my thinking but I love to read and I would never pass this book on to any of my friends --perhaps I should get to a good bookclub to hear how other folks found it both funny and a great read!

After all the hoopla, I expected a good book. Not so. I didn't like this book at all.

I asked for this book for Christmas after reading too many golden reviews. Yes, it clips right along but it is astoundingly gratuitously violent. Well, lots of books are, but this tortures a horse for no reason that I can discern except a few thrills and chills for the heartless or benumbed. I like to stay abreast of upcoming writers but this guy is no Larry McMurtry, who can write about the violence of the time and make you care about why as well as love the story. I dont usually shy away from violent stories but would never recommend this one to anyone with a love of animals.

The best thing about the book is that the graphics are swell. And the writer is technically promising; maybe next time he will find something more valuable to say.

Got it for Christmas because I requested it thinking that if it's so highly acclaimed it must be good. Also, the back of the book sounded interesting and fun. Aside from the few, spare comical parts and the simple fact that the writing itself is relatively good, this book was incredibly disappointing, a waste of time. The story is not full of twists and turns, as some have said. It is boring, empty and depressing. The only part of the book I enjoyed was Eli's relationship with his horse, and that's not saying much. Several times, I had to read about how the narrator pleasures himself, and even more annoying, his many observations of his brother's genitalia. If you like that sort of thing, read this book. If you enjoy unlikable characters, read this book. If you're looking for a mundane, uninteresting plot, read this book. Were there so few other books laying about that this one lucked into winning so many awards?

Art Matters: The Art of Knowledge/The Knowledge of Art

What a lot of hype. What a lot of expectations.

Often when a book, or a movie, or a record, gets a lot of hype, and you don't like it, you usually can tell why other people do. In this case I could not.

I found the writing style hard to read. I plodded on and after about two thirds of the way in I got into the rhythm. By this time my wife had given up on the book.

I also did not find the story interesting. That is largely due the the flat writing and because for me the characters never came alive.

And, when I finally reached the end, and told my wife the ending she said, with my agreement, that it was not worth the effort.

Why is this book so well reviewed? It wasn't the least bit funny. Are these reviewers smoking pot? It wasn't the least bit interesting. From reading the jacket cover and some of the reviews, and checking out all the awards it had won, it sounded like the book was a combination of Elmore Leonard meets Vladimir Nabakov. Not so! I kept waiting for something to happen (a joke, some fine writing, some plot ... something), and then I got to the end and I thought. "What the hell was the point of that?" I am so out of touch with what people consider literature these days.

For all the hype, I also found this book to be a disappointment. I had to force myself to read it to the end and cannot understand why it is on the top 10 list.

It was NOT a book for me - I found it brutal, troubling and didn't like either of the brothers - thought they were dreadful human beings and I struggled to finish it.

Loved the first three quarters of this, loved the style, loved the plot - despised the ending, stupid with two capital o's.

I seldom give up on a book but I gave up on this one. This probably disqualifies me from commenting further.
