Excellence in a book!,
By
This review is from: Colored Pencil Portraits Step by Step (Hardcover)
This book is a must have for beginning colored pencil artists. It gives you a lot of ideas on how to improve your drawing of people and even pick up a few ideas for other things you may draw. The intro was very nicely done and gives you a great amount of info on what you need to perform. Besides being good for giving you ideas, the drawings inside the book will make your mouth drop open and make you work harder to find that extra little talent you have hidden in you. Go ahead and try it, you won't be disappointed.

I would not recommend this book for the reason of repetition and lack of REAL technique.Colored pencil is tricky and I found no real solutions to this medium. Thanks

I've been associated with colored pencils (Prismacolor, back when they were still Berol) since high school so I remember the Bet Borgeson books back in the 80's...trust me,they don't hold a candle to this book.I bought Gary Greene's "Creating textures in colored pencil" in the mid 90's and was instantly besotted with the (unfortunately) small section devoted to Ann Kullberg and her technique. After years of trial and error,Kullberg's common sense approach had me slapping my head and saying, "Why didn't I think of that?" I used that section in Gary Greene's book as a reference guide ever afterwards and was pleased when Ms Kullberg gave us a full book (this one) showcasing her method and abilities. The illustrator Bill Nelson is probably the greatest practitioner in the Prismacolor field today, but Ann Kullberg is without a doubt the best teacher. An Invaluable reference guide for the prismacolor portrait artist.

This book is amazing!!! Ann Kullberg is a gifted artist, as well as a great writer. Her style of teaching is easy to follow for anyone who is new to colored pencils, and very informative for accomplished artists as well. "Colored Pencil Portraits Step by Step," talks the reader through every step, from explaining the tools necessary, to the technique, and even explains how to handle the business aspect of selling artwork.I have read every page several times over, and I continue to use it as reference material. I highly recommend "Colored Pencil Portraits Step by Step" by Ann Kullberg.

Ann Can Color!,

This book is awesome to have...it truly is step by step and explains how to "see" color. Giving palattes for different skin tones was very helpful for me. I have been to one of Ann's workshops where she teaches her technique hands on...and although I learned a lot there, I refer to this book frequently for "refreshers".

Essential for the aspiring coloured pencil portrait artist!,

Ann Kullberg is a self-taught artist, and as such, has a knack for making the tips and techniques presented in her book easily understandable to anyone - including those among us with no formal training, but a desire to create beautiful coloured pencil portraits. Her book is filled with step-by-step demonstrations on perfecting skin tones, lighting, and painting realistic hair, as well as suggestions on determining proper composition in portraits. There is a bit on backgrounds and fabrics, but most of the focus is on painting the portrait subject. Her forth-coming book, "Capturing Soft Realism in Colored Pencil" will offer more in the way of creating interior and exterior backgrounds. If you have dabbled in portraiture and are now looking for resources to expand upon - look no further than this book! .... .... And, I'm STILL eagerly learning!

This book is great for learning to use color pencils, I still find my self referring back to it many times. It dose such a good job on using many tones. I suggest you get this book because it will definitely help you become better at color pencil. There is still some stuff that doesn't seem right in the pictures though she is a great at color pencil I wish I could say the same for her drawing skills, this book is great if you want to learn how to use color pencil, but not so great on drawing. But it's still one you'll need.

This book is one of my favorit books out of all the art books i own (which is a awful lot). Its like my bible for drawing now... I have always loved pencil art.... and always wonderd how they make it look so real.... the trick is to look at it from the bottom layer, and up. Anyways after reading Ann Kullberg's book i have understand how to do so much more then what i did...before reading the book....i have to admit i never really read the art books i have, i just look throught them at the instrutions.... but i started reading this book and could not put it down! It tells how to do so much details like: she shows you what kind of tools to use,and how to make cheaper ones, she shows you light and how to use it, she shows you mood, how to make skin tones, gives you steps on how to color the face and hair, how to make clothes in all kinds of fabric. The book even gives you demostrations whith some of her paintings, And I almost forgot it gives you a section on how to sale you art work in the busniess. This book is so wonderful it has made it alot easier to do my pencil drawings. It is a good book if your needing help or if you just want to look at the awsome pitures that she has created.
