5.0 out of 5 stars You won't be disappointed
If you saw this book on the shelves of a bookstore, chances are you might not pick it up: its layout is almost childish, with large type and lots of illustrations.
It's not that thick or impressive. You would most likely drop it in favor of one of the more serious looking, more expensive books. And you would be making a huge mistake.

3.0 out of 5 stars More ice cream, less Ben & Jerry, please...
This book is great if you're interested in the history and hijinks of the eponymous Ben & Jerry, or if you absolutely must have the specific recipe for one of their trademark flavors.

However, as an general purpose manual to making ice cream, it leaves a lot to be desired. More than half of the included recipes can be summed up as "Start with our sweet cream base, turn...

It's not that thick or impressive. You would most likely drop it in favor of one of the more serious looking, more expensive books. And you would be making a huge mistake.
Unlike ice cream recipes I picked up from other "serious" books, every single recipe I've made from this book resulted in amazing ice cream. The butter pecan was heavenly. The cookies & cream perfect.
There are lots of little tips and explanations, and anecdotes.
Quite possibly the only recipe book you'll ever need for your ice cream maker.

5.0 out of 5 stars The theory and practice of making ice cream, April 4 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream & Dessert Book (Paperback)
The book starts out with the Ben and Jerry story, goes onto the theory of ice cream making and then provides recipes. Along the way are anecdotes and hints. All done in an easy to read brief style.

The book makes it easy to get started and provides advice that allows you to experiment confidently to create your own flavours. We bought it at the same time as we bought our ice cream maker KitchenAid KICA0WH Ice Cream Maker Attachment Thanks to this book we get lots of use out of the machine.

An invaluable book for anybody who wants to make ice cream for themselves.

This book is great if you're interested in the history and hijinks of the eponymous Ben & Jerry, or if you absolutely must have the specific recipe for one of their trademark flavors.

However, as an general purpose manual to making ice cream, it leaves a lot to be desired. More than half of the included recipes can be summed up as "Start with our sweet cream base, turn according to manufacturer's instructions, add chunks of [nut/candy/dough] two minutes before it finishes." Sure, that's what's worked for Ben & Jerry, but it's rather limited in scope and they could have gotten the message across in a third of the pages.

It's a short, easy read, and [for the money]it's not exactly a waste of money, but for a more thorough education in iced desserts, plan on picking up another book.

The only way I'll make something is if it's easy. This cookbook is so easy!! It uses items you probably already have in your cabinets and it tastes just as good as their pricey pints in the store! Wise and solid investment to buy this book!

If you like Ben & Jerry's ice cream, this is the book for you. So far I have only managed to make several batches of Cherry Garcia ice cream . I made ice cream sandwiches with it for a party and everyone was blown away. I'm very keen to try many many more flavors. The recipes are easy and there lots of useful tips and information to keep you entertained as well. I have the KitchenAid ice cream maker attachment which makes little work of the process and you can be eating soft ice cream in 20 minutes. A word of warning though, the main recipe base includes raw eggs which makes the best flavor and texture but there are some recipes that don't include raw eggs but they say the ice cream doesn't freeze well. That is a lot of ice cream to eat in one sitting.

This review is from: Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream & Dessert Book (Paperback)
This is a really fun book. I bought it with the KitchenAid ice cream attachment and have been using them together ever since. The recipes are clear and concise, easy to follow to make great tasting ice cream. There are some stories along with the ice cream recipes, kind of gives an idea where they got there ideas for the different flavours. Good book, throughly enjoying it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, but update is needed, July 19 2004

I received a Cuisinart ice cream maker last Christmas and, while I have come up with some great ideas on my own, I was looking for some new ideas to try. This book fits that bill admirably. I have found LOTS of good inspiration here. My only complaint is that it is a bit dated in that nearly all of the recipes call for raw eggs. I wouldn't want to substitute Egg Beaters since my favorite part of the egg (and the part that adds the richness of flavor) is the yolk, which is what EB leaves out. I'm considering cooking the base to make the base a custard-base in order to get around this problem. I will use this cookbook a lot, I am sure, but hope they eventually come out with an updated version!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!, May 17 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream & Dessert Book (Paperback)
Bought this book based on reviews on the Cusinart ice cream maker! Wow, have tried the Sweet Base and the Choc. ice cream (Jerry's) so far. Excellent results! Sweet Base recipe uses heavy whipping cream. Have to say it was yummy but leaves a slick coating on the top of your mouth. Think I will adjust the heavy cream or just use whipping cream which the choc. recipe used. Didn't leave that feeling at all. Also, I used Egg Beaters in both recipes. Can't wait to try another recipe!

Only tried the Oreos and Cream recipe so far (we're supposed to be on a diet...) but it is WONDERFUL. And incredibly easy to make. Beats any custard-based ice-cream I've ever made or had. And if you are squeamish about using raw eggs, just use pasteurized eggs or egg substitutes and get over it!
