5.0 out of 5 stars if you're serious about writing
Some books never go out of style, rarely become dated & endure as useful, understandable & applicable, GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT is one of those.

My copy is flagged at the problems I just don't seem able to remember, underlined where I consistently err. It has taken on a well-worn look as I refer to it repeatedly while I edit, making sure that what I've written is...

2.0 out of 5 stars Poorly organized, difficult to navigate
There may be some very helpful information in this book, but it is near impossible to find any of it. The index is missing some seemingly obvious entried, and the the table of contents isn't all that helpful either. You'd be better off with the Chicago Manual of Style, which contains everything you could possibly want to know, and is much better organized.

Some books never go out of style, rarely become dated & endure as useful, understandable & applicable, GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT is one of those.

My copy is flagged at the problems I just don't seem able to remember, underlined where I consistently err. It has taken on a well-worn look as I refer to it repeatedly while I edit, making sure that what I've written is as polished as I can make it.

All those English classes we took at school become forgotten as we daily use our language & become so familiar with it that we don't realize how idiosyncratic is our style, how we perpetuate grammatical glitches, consistently misspell, & pepper our prose with breathless punctuation.

GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT is eminently user-friendly & definitely one of the best books I've found on what good writing looks like & how to attain it. (Ampersand (&) notwithstanding-that's my idiosyncratic stand!)

4.0 out of 5 stars An ideal reference for the grammatically challenged., Jan 2 2003

Whether you are brushing up on your grammar, or you were never very good at it, "Grammatically Correct" is an excellent reference. It is clear, concise, and easy to follow. I agree with a previous review that the chapter should be listed at the top of the pages for easy flipping, but it's something one can easily forego.
This book covers a wide array of common oversights not just in the world of English grammar but spelling and punctuation as well.
There have been times where I have argued with my computer when it flagged something with a grammatical error, but I now know what it was talking about.
This reference has proven to be very useful both at home and at work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best reference book for those who are aspiring to write, Dec 27 2001
This review is from: Grammatically Correct (Hardcover)
I have found "Grammatically Correct : The Writer's Essential Guide to Punctuation, Spelling, Style, Usage and Grammar" as the ultimate reference for writers of all levels. Many who read this book would recognize the similarities with it and "The Elements of Style," but Anne Stilman's book covers more relevant topics and even gives readers quizzes to test what they have learned from the book. Not only it covers a great deal on topics such as grammar, spelling, style, etc., but it also covers punctuation, something that "The Elements of Style" unfortunately does not.

Although it covers a lot of topics, it is to the point without all the superfluous information that tends to make reading a tedious task. Stilman writes with wittiness as well as conciseness. She also deals with modern issues in today's writing such as writing "politically correct." To me, this book is the expanded ad updated version of Strunk Jr. and E.B. White's "The Elements of Style."

I highly recommend this book to the aspiring writer as well as the experienced one because this also serves as the definitive reference.

This book is so good, my teenage son has discovered that he can use it as a better reference than his textbooks. The book is neatly written with a clear concise style. In addition to grammar, the book is a great resource for questions about usage, punctuation and spelling. As a journalist I need to have resources such as this readily available. I keep this one next to Strunk and White.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good information, needs better index., Mar 25 2001
This review is from: Grammatically Correct (Hardcover)
I am a nontraditional college student, and have forgotten quite a bit about punctuation and grammar. I needed a good reference for my writing classes. This is a good source, and walks the reader through each concept, but you cannot find information quickly. For example, I needed to know how to set off the name of a ship; does it go in italics, or quotation marks? I had to guess and look under each to find the answer. The answers are there, and this book has become valuable, but it needs a better index.

Grammatically Correct, the Writer's Essential Guide to punctuation, spelling, style, usage and grammar is not only an indispensable read for all writers but I believe it is imperative. Anne Stillman does a superb job in teaching the writer the basic fundamentals of word usage. Many writers can sometimes become casual in their writing style and inadvertently misuse grammar, punctuation and style. I personally have had that problem until I started thoroughly studying Grammatically Correct. Anne Stillman directs our attention to some things that we may take for granted, such as the most frequently misused words, plural formations and negative formations. As one other reviewer stated, it compares to the Elements of Style in many respects but goes above and beyond to further indoctrinate the reader to become a better writer. Grammatically Correct is just what the title says-Correct. Anne Stillman has helped me to curve my writing according to the proper usage of punctuation, spelling, grammar and style. She is extremely knowledgeable and every writer should own her book, Grammatically Correct. Kudos!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beneficial, Jun 15 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Grammatically Correct (Hardcover)
It has been some time since I've exercised my brain cells to form grammatically correct sentences on paper. I found this book extremely helpful in refreshing my mind to the "basics" of grammar. Ms. Stilman provided enough examples for even those who are slow witted (like myself) can understand. Her style is simple and straightforward without making you feel like an idiot. I highly encourage those who are looking for an easy way in understanding grammar (rules even the average person forgets at times) to buy this book. In fact, it helped me in writing this review.
