5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory volume
I have been teaching orienteering for seven years, and this book is everything I could ask for in an introductory text. There are more advanced books, it is true, but this book is reasonably priced, highly readable, and complete enough for the beginning through intermediate adventurer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wilderness navigation
This book may be small enough to carry as a primer on land navigation for folks venturing into the wilds without knowledge or experience of map and compass skills.

However, as a text on land navigation skills it was disappointing. Better choices would be the Land Navigation Handbook: The Sierra Club Guide to Map and Compass by W. Kals (excellent) or M. Ferguson's...

This review is from: Wilderness Navigation: Finding Your Way Using Map, Compass, Altimeter, & GPS, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
I have been a Search Master/Manager for some time. Purchased this book (and others) solely as a reference guide to see if it could assist me in assisting others in how to learn navigation using compass, altimeter, GPS etc. The title within "Mountaineers outdoor basics" indicated to me the level of complexity.
It is a superb book for those who are starting out or who have been absent from this area of skill for some time. It clearly educates you in the basics and some common mistakes in areas titled tips.
Book is well laid out and can be used by age groups from early teens to adults. Sound product.

5.0 out of 5 stars clear, concise, complete, Sep 24 1999

Clear, concise and complete guide to wilderness travel. Well written with appropriate practice problems. Excellent book which is small and light enough to be in ones pack. But you really should study the book before you go into the wilderness. Reasonably priced.
