This is a truly outstanding analysis of the many faults and failures of socialism.
There are several excellent reviews at Amazon.com (these should be, but for some reason are not, linked to this site.)

5.0 out of 5 stars An Economic Journey, Jan. 6 2012

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: SOCIALISM (Paperback)
The material presented is an all encompassing economic and sociological account, of how a society functions. Most modern economic material, tends to be boiled down to various mathematical models. Well economics is about how people inter act with each other. I do not believe these sort of things, can be acknowledged from a purely mathematical perspective. Ludwig Von Mises takes the reader through historical customs, to explain how a society behaves. He also unravels the mind set of central planners, business people, employes, various nationalities, and free marketers.

The reader will examine all the various forms of socialism. Von Mises gives real life examples, and identifies why these socialistic practices always fail. He also does a great job analyzing both sides of the argument. He describes exactly what the central planners were attempting, and what motivates the supporters of socialistic policies. Von Mises then counters with the classic liberal or free market argument.

This was an amazing book. However, the prospective reader should be warned this will be a slow read. You can expect to make lots of notes in the margins.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, Dec 30 2011
This review is from: SOCIALISM (Paperback)
This book answered so many questions I had about socialism and deepened by classical liberal convictions. This book is not a light read (it took me six months to finish); you have to read a chapter, then sit and let the ideas soak in. I experienced many "eureka!" moments; it is impossible to list them all.

If you want to understand the core of socialism, its motivations and inevitable outcomes, you should read this book. In understanding socialism, you will understand why classical liberalism is the best political-economic system available.
