A Comprehensive Guide to Ayurveda,
By
This review is from: Ayurvedic Healing: A Comprehensive Guide (Paperback)
Ayurvedic Healing is an excellent book whether you know anything about the Vedic medical science of Ayurveda, or not. The book deals with finding out what body type you have, (vata-air, pitta-fire, kapha- earth/water),helps you determine what kind of diet you can follow ,how to deal with common ailments as well as major diseases. And that is just section I. In section II, it deals with the technical preparations which ayurvedic doctors use. Thus this book can be used to good effect by anyone.

One of the best books in English on Ayurveda,
By A Customer
This review is from: Ayurvedic Healing: A Comprehensive Guide (Paperback)
~I have read dozens of books on Ayurveda published in English; this stands out as simply the best of what I have read.It is sensitive, sympathetic to the conditions discussed, and lucid. A great work. So many others have been based on (and written with) excellent information and the best of intentions, but somehow have ended up being more confusing than helpful... even in something as basic as classifying doshas, I never really grasped them clearly until I read this book, which is laid out~~ calmly, clearly, and with massive knowledge and experience underlying its clarity. Again, an excellent book by someone who also seems to be a great human being-- it flows through all his words.~

Excellent book! Easy to understand, individual subjects are easy to find, well written. I made the mistake of lending this book out and it wasn't returned! I will buy another copy because it's the best book I've found on Ayurveda.

I consider this, along with "Heaven's Banquet", to be my Personal Health Handbook. Finally, as a result of this book, I get the sense of sooo much of the Eastern way, that I didn't accept/understand before... E.g. mantra-therapy: Reciting a mantram, mindfully, does several things... a) it exercises one's body & breathing, rhythmically b) it resonates one's body's diaphragm in a particular pattern way c) it resonates one's energy/awareness/mind in a particular way, d) it weakens mindlessness in that mantram's particular way ( some are sharp, some are rounded, etc ) NOW I understand how so simple & fundamental a practice objectively CAN modify one's health & wellbeing! ( so, yet another ignorance in me is pierced! :) I find there to be few things in it I can't accept ( 1 being Gotu Kola's being calming: it's a tonic, according to wikipedia! ), or, AT LEAST, I'm going to have to test, before I trust, since the information I've got is contradictory. I discovered that the blowtorch-style meditations I do cause Prana & Kundalini distortions, and that these distortions match my condition completely, therefore, I'm switching to gentler meditations { bodhichitta, union of bodhichitta & wisdom-realizing-emptiness, & spontaneous-Awareness simply-BEing }, instead of my habitual blast-through-one's-obstacles meditation. I discovered that a friend, who's depressed, is doing exactly what is required to reinforce that depression, for their dosha. -shrug- I've TRIED to get 'em to change means, to get different-results, but if they're committed to their means, their means must mean more to 'em than the results they're complaining about: their free will, their Eternity, their choice, and I cut ties with those who are DETERMINED to go-down, so *I* can get out of samsara. Consider it the Whole Health manual you never got when born, and you're on the right track ( IF you can tolerate/accept Eastern-thinking as valid! for many years I couldn't, but understand better, now: Universe ISN'T just what western-belief said/believed! :) HTH! |
