My crown's off to this feisty princess whose prince is worse than a frog!,
By Betty L. Dravis "BETTY DRAVIS, author/reviewer" (Silicon Valley, CA) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)

My unroyal crown is off to both the author and the illustrator of this wonderful book. Not only is it a great book to read to your kids, it's enhanced with colorful illustrations that show them the meanings of the words.Although it's for all kids, it will be especially encouraging for young girls who will want to be just like this strong, brave, smart Princess Elizabeth. This book is an excellent choice for the next baby shower you attend, a gift that will teach the child the magic of imagination AND confidence. I guarantee it will become a keepsake in the family.

Kids Love Munsch Stories!,
By
This review is from: The Paper Bag Princess (Paperback)
As an Education major and child care employee, I have scoured book stores and book fairs to find quality literature for use in the classroom. I often utilize the preschool children that I work with as "guinea pigs" and rate thier reactions to such literature. They loved the Paper Bag Princess! Although I brought the entire Munschworks collection to school last week, I was asked (and often ordered) to read only thie particular story each day, and often several times in a day.The children were filled with laughter at various points in the story, especially when I would flip to the page in which Elizabeth tricks the dragon into using up all of his firey dragon breath-the children would instantly yell out, "He doesn't have enough dragon breath to cook a meatball...ha ha ha". By the middle of the week, the children were reciting this story to thier friends and parents, and even acting it out (they enjoyed calling each other bums at the end). Munsch stories are truly a delight for any classroom or individual child's library!

Love Elizabeth,

There are princesses who sit around in misery waiting for a prince to come and save them, and then there is Elizabeth. This clever, independent princess is an excellent model for young women and holds an honored place on my bookshelf. Do your daughters a favor and read this to them often. My Favorite Kids Book,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Paper Bag Princess (Paperback)
As an active babysitter, I am constantly in search of good books to read to kids. This book was a favorite of mine when I was little, and now that I've rediscovered it, I've read it almost every time I've babysat recently. The story makes so much sense, and for once, the protaganist is a strong female. The kids I read it to have asked me for it so much, I have the book memorized. This is definitely a great choice for any kid's library, and the witty story is just perfect for the 4-9 set. I highly recomend The Paper Bag Princess!

she doesn't end up with the prince,
By
This review is from: The Paper Bag Princess (Paperback)
one of the reasons this story is great is because its one of the few books where the story doesn't end with the girl getting a guy. princesses and romance go hand in hand, even when the princess is a tough, adventure-seeking, swash-buckling tomboy, for the most part they end up with a guy. in fact stories with female protagonists that don't end up with a guy could probably be counted on one hand, its a huge part of our cultural perception of women and their happiness. in this one she flips the guy off and walks happily into the sunset by herself. especially at a time where stories like this are competing with barbie and bratz for our young girls, and i guess the boys who think the girls are like that, this is one of the more popular stories where the princess is smart and gutsy and gets things done to her satisfaction. its not even close to the only story like this, but as i say, one of the more popular. it teaches kids that girls aren't delicate pieces of glass and can yell out 'you are a bum!', which is funny and has none of the pretentious ideas about making little girls into little women instead of letting them be little girls. also, it has been commented that the story isn't the most literately complex, to those people i say you obviously haven't heard it live. it doesn't need to be a novel to get the message across. a lot of people i know and i see drill into their kids the need to always be challenging themselves, which is good, but they also don't let them do non-challenging things for fun, which is semi robotic. i mean they're just kids, who cares if its a line a page and that line isn't the most mind blowing sentence in the english language. if it fun, its ok. loosen up a bit.

By Awesome Man (Alberta) - See all my reviews

This book is so worth buying. The end made me laugh so hard so I bought it for my niece. I think it's such a good moral for girls who now a days are growing up with these twisted views of themselves.I recommend this 100% You will not be dissapointed.

Mr. Munsch's wonderful book,
By Cordless Iron Man (Curacao) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Paper Bag Princess (Paperback)
This was the first Munsch book that I bought and I quickly went out and bought a whole load more. He's an excellent writer with a wonderful range of stories and a beautifully simple and fluid style of writing that is both accessible to children and able to roll off the tongue of most adults. As you'll see from the other reviews here, this tale is about a young girl who, filled with nothing but courage, charity and a fair bit of brains, goes off to rescue a young prince from a ferocious dragon. After using all of her cunning to defeat the dragon she discovers that the prince is a bit of a monster himself, and so she decides not to marry him after all. Although I agree that the story has a wealth of small lessons for children to learn about boys and girls and expectations and disappointments, I think that one of its strongest points is that the book serves as a wonderful introduction to the fact that not all stories end the way we expect them to (it's still a happy ending, just a different one) and that sometimes a twist can be more satisfying anyway. Highly recommended for children from 3 to 103.

This review is from: The Paper Bag Princess (Library Binding)
The Paper Bag Prinsess is a funny and silly book for little children. Its about a princess named Elizabeth and a prince named Arnold. They're about to get married when a dragon comes and taks Arnold away. Elizabeth goes on a quest to find him. Well, if you want to hear the ending you'll have to read the story. I love this book. I read it to my little brother all the time. |
