This is the one type of comprehensive book that the homebrewing community needs. It is fairly comprehensive and gives the reader information on many styles of beers that is needed to reproduce classic brews. It only represents classics styles, such as pilsener, stout, and neglects newer styles such as Cream Ale, American Lager, and Belgian and Abbey Style ales. It is a valuable reference none the less and should be a part of every homebrewers library.

The two part sturcture of the book is perfect. Your brewing knowlege will increase exponentially when you read this book. The history of each style is detailed enough to give you a flavor of how a particular style orgininated and how it is brewed today.
The information provided in section 1 is invaluable. If you enjoy brewing you will definately enjoy this book. A MUST HAVE for all craft and especially homebrewers library!!!

This book is definitely showing it's age and missing many of the popular beer styles of today. I didn't learn very much from this book and don't bother referencing it at all anymore. The most annoying part of the book is that it didn't have any recipes (to my knowledge), it just compiled statistics of beers sent to the National Homebrew Competitions. You can find much better information on the internet.

Easy to follow step by step guide that covers all aspects of designing a beer. Clear easy to follow mathematical examples enhances the learning process. Great, clear details are given on why different styles are brewed in their own fashion. Local brewmasters also agree that it is a good starting book to understand if you considering entering the field of brewing.

What the book lacks in polish and editing, it makes up for in indispensible information for the all-grain, recipie formulator. It does not attempt to cover all beer styles, and therfore leaves the reader a little short. Belgain styles in particular were notably missed. Nonetheless highly valuable, easy to use, and recommended.

Ray Daniels not only knows a great deal about beer, he knows how to write, organize and design a great book. The first book anyone interested in taking the step from beer drinker to brewer should buy. A nice gift for your "beer expert" buddy who needs to back up his statements with fact. Cheers

If you are looking to gain knowledge on the history of a style this is the book for you. I really like that recipe advice is given by examining homebrew competition winners. I am reading this for the second time. Hopefully another similar book is written to encompass more styles

If you're the type of homebrewer who likes to create his/her own recipes from scratch, stop making beer until you get this book. Since I read it over a year ago, all my own recipes have come out great. A true bible. Hey Ray, where's volume 2!!!

"Designing Great Beers" is an excellent reference for any home brewer looking to create their own recipes. Combined with "How to Brew" and "Brewing Classic Styles", "Designing Great Beers" is a great addition to any home brewer's library.
