5.0 out of 5 stars Great for everyone!
This book is so good it's impossible to describe how good it is with words but I'll do my best. first of all it takes place a while back, that's what makes it unique. it has somthing for everybody who reads it. it has a mild love story. but if you don't like that it has some mystery on the edge of your seat things about it. it also has adventureous parts of the...

3.0 out of 5 stars This book was an enjoyable light read.
This book was about a fourteen year old boy in France in the 1950's. He lives in a little town with an abusive father and a mysterious castle that he is determined to find out the history of. I found it was the type of boook you like to read when you are not in the mood for anything too deep. It was sweet and I could relate to it, but I found that the audience it...

4.0 out of 5 stars An intriguing story of post-war France, Aug 29 2002
This review is from: The Crouching Dragon (Hardcover)
_The Crouching Dragon_ by Len Lamensdorf has a tight yet descriptive prose style, a good sense for movement and pace, and an intriguing story line that compels the reader to follow William with interest.
The book has many of the hallmarks of a young adult book with staying power. The protagonist is confronted with a situation in which he must act independently of parents and other adult authority (and in many cases, in spite of them) he is involved in an alternate world (somewhat removed from any particular time-- keeps the story from becoming dated), and he experiences personal growth.
I look forward to reading _The Raging Dragon_ and _The Flying Dragon_.

The Crouching Dragon is an enchanting fable of fantasy, adventure, ancient history, romance and competition . In a small French town in 1959, William and his friends help create a half-fantasy kingdom out of the mysterious castle called the Crouching Dragon. In the castle they help in restoring a hidden Kingdom, discovering real medieval artifacts. The teenagers solve a mystery of puzzling disappearances in their town with the help of the President de Gaulle.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Cover that Doesn't Dissappoint, Dec 4 1999

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Crouching Dragon (Hardcover)
Hi my name is Clayton. I am 11 years old. I read this book because I believe sometimes you can judge a book by its cover. If the cover has something like a big grassy plain and is called Velvet Roses, I can tell I won't like it. But if it has a big dragon and is called The Crouching Dragon, even metaphorically, it obviously has a good topic. I read this book and ten pages into it I knew I was right. The thing I liked about it was that it describes a situation that every boy wants to be in, but doesn't involve doing somthing completely impossible like in Harry Potter. It was never too hard to follow, yet always enjoyably strange and challenging. I would suggest this book to anyone, no matter what kind of book you like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heroes Everyone Can Relate To, Dec 3 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Crouching Dragon (Hardcover)
I really loved reading The Crouching Dragon. We need more heroes that we can follow, not comic book ones like Xena or ones like Buffy fighting enemies that don't exist in the real world. Both my brother and I loved reading the book and since he is in 4th grade and I am in high school, anyone over age 8 should love this book too. We both have read the Narnia books and the Harry Potter books, but the heroes in those books need magic to overcome their enemies. The great thing about The Crouching Dragon is that the heroes beat their enemies by banding together and supporting each other instead of needing magic. Another great thing is that one of main characters is a woman who does not have to act like a man to be a hero. I love to read history and I want to go to Europe as soon as I can so I loved the parts of this book that described France in such detail that I felt like I was there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crouching Dragon, Dec 2 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Crouching Dragon (Hardcover)
My only problem with The Crouching Dragon is that it kept me up all night reading it. This is one of the best adventure stories I've ever read, with characters I really care about and one surprise after another. What a terrific ending. I guess I'll just have to read it again while I'm waiting for the author to deliver the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars It Can Be Done, Nov 21 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Crouching Dragon (Hardcover)
Not hyped full of magic, but grounded in reality entertainment. A pleasant variation on the stuff being fed to growing minds, this young adult novel cleanly transcends fiction. Archtypes we all have to learn to live with present themselves in touchingly real-life dramas. The Crouching Dragon captures and grows imagination while we're educated in history, geography, art & craft - even a foreign language. These kids could run with the Hardy boys! This middle aged guy looks forward to some more enjoyable looking back through Lamensdorf's "will to conquer" series.

5.0 out of 5 stars (drumroll,please)...FIVE STARS!, Nov 16 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Crouching Dragon (Hardcover)
Upon reading the first chapter of this book I was instantly excited and thirsty for more. Any war, history, or medieval topic lover will devour this in a few hours under the covers after your parents have gone to bed. Unless they are intellectual, readers under 12 years old may find Skipping through and reading the parts about the castle instead of reading the background parts. But if you're like me and enjoy vivid description, you will enjoy the whole thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting. I had a good time reading it!, Nov 13 1999

This review is from: The Crouching Dragon (Hardcover)
The story is very exciting. The kids are people I would like to know. It had a very strong female character in it, and I liked that a LOT. I liked the war reinactment in the Dragon's Head. Very realistic!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Ten-Year-Old gives it a TEN!, Nov 10 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Crouching Dragon (Hardcover)
Upon reading the first chapter of this book I was instantly excited and thirsty for more. Any war, history, or medieval topic lover will devour this in a few hours under the covers after your parents have gone to bed.

The perspective was from the mind of an American-hating young French boy. I eventually found myself wondering whether the author, Len Lamensdorf, was French but I never did find out. Hmmmmmm...? This must be one of those life mysteries.

Unless they are intellectual, readers under 12 years old may find themselves skipping through and reading the parts about the castle instead of reading the background parts. But if you're like me and enjoy vivid description, you will enjoy the whole
