5.0 out of 5 stars Right On!
Since I don't get to surf everyday, this book is exactly what I needed to stay in surfing shape. I have a number of other fitness related books, but none address surfing fitness. This book gave me exactly what I've been looking for. I've since given it to a number of friends and they have all told me how helpful they have found it as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing...
There is very little in this book that the average fitness-minded person does not already know. Granted, it does provide some ideas how to properly structure your training, and also a few exercises (esp. plyometrics) that are unique to this book, but on the overall does not have detailed enough information on surf-specific workouts. Also, the instructions for some of the...

This book just kicked butt for me. It got me to acheive a new level of fitness, cranked up endurance, and improved my all around well being, weather I'm surfing, working, or sitting on my butt watching football. Rocky has presented the material in a straightforward, easy to understand, follow, and execute style which really gets you motivated. An all around excellent fitness book for not only surfers, but for any outdoor enthusiast. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

My daughter bought me this book before a surf trip to Mexico. I had never surfed before and am not a "spring chicken". After doing the exercises in Rocky's book I was more fit than I've ever been and at age 50 learned to surf. I can't say enough good things about this book.
What are you waiting for?.... BUY IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Going Big!, Aug 29 2003
By A Customer
As an advanced beginner surfer who is always trying to get to the next level, I found this guide both educational and effective. The exercises outlined where very easy to follow and incorporate into my workout routine - each exercise had a detailed explanation and photo(s) which was extremely helpful. I particularly liked the sections on balance and coordination. I also bought this book for my mom before I took her to surf camp for the first time. She used the guide to help prepare her for the rigors of learning to surf and she loved it! She passed it onto my brother who has been surfing for 15 years and he was also able to gain some valuable insight. I'd say it's a must read for anyone who surfs and wants to improve their performance.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing..., July 16 2003

This review is from: Fit to Surf: The Surfer's Guide to Strength Training & Conditioning (Paperback)
There is very little in this book that the average fitness-minded person does not already know. Granted, it does provide some ideas how to properly structure your training, and also a few exercises (esp. plyometrics) that are unique to this book, but on the overall does not have detailed enough information on surf-specific workouts. Also, the instructions for some of the more complex strength exercises such as the squat are dangerously inadequate. While such exercises may be highly productive if performed with correct form, the description in this book does not include even basic aspects of the right technique, and may so set you up for injury. Even though this was one of the first, there are better books on this topic!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book-, May 18 2003

This review is from: Fit to Surf: The Surfer's Guide to Strength Training & Conditioning (Paperback)
I bought this book for my boyfriend for Valentine's Day..I figured he'd get some good use out of it, but I had no idea he would really get so much out of this book. He read the book and picked out the areas he wanted to work on, and set himself up with a routine that he does, and since he knows that these particular moves are aiding his surfing ability and endurance, he had no trouble at all sticking to them! If you're already a body builder, this book is no good for you. It's more for the person who exercises regularly, but didn't really have a form and routine to follow to make the most of it, and get the most out of it. Makes a great gift for a surfer who needs a little more endurance, or it just starting out, or one who just needs something to keep them in surf shape during those cold winter months, or those poor surf days!

1.0 out of 5 stars Ugh--disappointing, Dec 11 2002

This review is from: Fit to Surf: The Surfer's Guide to Strength Training & Conditioning (Paperback)
If you have any knowledge of strength training whatsover, or if you already train (cardiovascular and/or resistance)on a semi-regular basis you don't need this book. The list of excercises is basic, the movement descriptions (kinesiology) aren't adequately detailed, and there were no compelling "surf specific" workouts.

The main point of the book is certainly salient: raise your fitness level (strength, endurance) and you will perform better and feel more comfortable in the water. However, if you really want to raise the general level of your fitness, buy a book on strength training and a book on flexibility and create your own workout to focus on core muscle groups. (Working out in a pool a couple of times a week wouldn't hurt either)

This review is from: Fit to Surf: The Surfer's Guide to Strength Training & Conditioning (Paperback)
My wife actually owns it and I flipped through her copy out of curiosity. After playing around with some of the stretches, I noticed less stiffness after sessions. This got me more curious & I tried more of the exercises and stretches. In a short time I definitely noticed improvements & felling better. I picked out a couple of the exercises & stretches & do them on a regular basis now.

2.0 out of 5 stars A fair guide but honestly I expected more..., April 20 2002
By
This review is from: Fit to Surf: The Surfer's Guide to Strength Training & Conditioning (Paperback)
A fair guide but honestly I expected more. As a new surfer, I found surfing much more physical than I expected. I bought this book for help. The strength ie weight-lifting excerises that ddominate the bulk of the book seem excessive for a young surfer. This seems more like a coach training guide for team surfers. To each their own but I expected more and prob wont use this book much.
