5.0 out of 5 stars Great horror story
I'd flipped through this graphic novel at my friendly neighborhood comic shop once or twice, but I didn't pick it up as the art style wasn't one that so much appealed to me -- not that there was anything wrong with it, Templesmith's manic, disjointed artwork fits the horror story perfectly... it just didn't grab me.

But when a friend of mine talked me into reading Steve...

3.0 out of 5 stars EHHHH
i purchased this book a few days ago, note i chose this over sandman 4, within 15-30 minutes later after arriving home i was finished with it, but besides the point the book left me feeling empty and longing for more, much like when i saw the first x-men movie. its problems seem to be related to the book.it needed to be longer, add more sideplots and a less cliched story...

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty nice shape for the price, July 29 2009
By
This review is from: 30 Days Of Night (Paperback)
The shipping delay was good. The book wasn't in a strong package and there was a little wear on the corners but for the price 4/5 is right!

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't Believe the Hype, July 14 2004
By
This review is from: 30 Days Of Night (Paperback)
Okay, this is my first book review and I'm only writing it to discourage people from paying $17+ dollars for this incredibly straightforward story. If you've read any of the other reviews or know anything about this book then you already know too much. The story never delves deeper than the basic premise- a group of fanatic vampires attack a small town in nowhere Alaska because it's night for 30 days... that's it. The Vampires remark to themselves "why didn't we think of this sooner", a fair sentiment and yet like the vampires, the author is so proud of his concept he forgets to do anything with the opportunity. Even though there's absolutely no character development or unexpected plot twists, the entire book could have been saved by outstanding artwork- unfortunately that falls well below my expectations (so much so it's nearly impossible to identify a main character by sight alone). Don't get me wrong, these are some blood-crazed soul suckers, but the art is so flat and muddled the only way you'd be scared is if you get the same reaction from a Pollock painting.

Now by no means do I qualify as a graphic novel connoisseur and I tend to follow hype. Fortunately hype has led me to a lot of great stories (Sandman, 100 Bullets, Hellboy, Preacher, Y Last Man, Wanted). Even with an intro by Clive Barker, who I whole- heartedly admire, I was more than sold. Sadly I can say no more than this book is lame. I read it in 10 minutes and felt completely ripped off. If this review was unhelpful or you're still not swayed after reading so many great things, I suggest you go to your local comic book store, read it there, and if it blows your mind buy a copy. But I'd wager if you have the slightest inkling of an imagination this book was 10x better in your head. And that's where I recommend you leave it.

4.0 out of 5 stars new comic horror for the 21st century, July 9 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: 30 Days Of Night (Paperback)
I first picked up 30 days of night a month ago and have been completely taken with it. The art is gritty and raw, none of the typical conventions. The writting is superb, giving one a feel of paranoia, fear and being trapped. This is one writer and artist to watch. I am looking forward to the sequel already released.

4.0 out of 5 stars reveiw of 30 days of night, April 30 2004

i ordered this book from a local book store because they didnt have any in stock and i wanted to read it after reading someone elses review in a magazine. i was so excited when i got the call that told me that it had come into the store. i get to the store, pick up the book, and open it... and to my surprise... its a comic book... me of all people reading a comic book! well as you can probably tell i wasnt too thrilled about that , yet i still enjoyed the book, and i lent it to all of my friends so that they could read it as well. they all loved it . it has a great story line and i loved the ending of the book but it is still a comic book... i would have given it all 5-stars, but i gave it 4 instead for the sheer reason that it was a comic book. but people that like comic books will absolutely love i tjust like me and most of my friends did and even people that dont like comic books will like it because it is an enjoyable peice and it is a lovely story. ciao-ciao!

2.0 out of 5 stars Looked cool, fell flat, Mar 5 2004

This is one of the few graphic novels that will actually have to have the plot filled out in order for it to be made into a film. It goes by so fast you're left feeling that you've read a synopsis of a much better, larger story. The artwork is dark and interesting but sometimes so murky that I had trouble distinguishing who I was looking at and who was attacking whom. I'm curious to see what the sequel will hold.

2.0 out of 5 stars Greta idea, poor execution, Feb 10 2004
By
John Watson (Woodbury, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 30 Days Of Night (Paperback)
I bought this book because of all the wonderful things I had read about it. Unfortunately, it turned out to be mostly hype. Firsy of all, the story takes place, as the title suggests, over a thirty day period. I found the pacing of the story was doomed by the brevity of the content. The thirty days is over and done with, the sun comes up, and I have no idea where the month went. It felt as if I had read an outline for a larger story. Nothing is fleshaed out, and the protangonist resolves the story in a flash. I really do not understand what people saw in this book. The characters have no depth, not a single one of them. The reader never gets a chance to know either hero nor villian before it is all over. The ideafor the story was fantastic, and I am a huge vampire fan, but I feel it needed to be an epic if it wished to live up to the premise. It needed more time to build and resolve. This is a comic in which the writers ability to execute and deliver a well-crafted horror tale was handicapped by length.

i purchased this book a few days ago, note i chose this over sandman 4, within 15-30 minutes later after arriving home i was finished with it, but besides the point the book left me feeling empty and longing for more, much like when i saw the first x-men movie. its problems seem to be related to the book.it needed to be longer, add more sideplots and a less cliched story line. it reminded me of a really sub-standard horror film (i.e. Deep Blue Sea) which in essence it was and will be when it is made into a film sometime. The book DEFINETLY needed more character development. the Husband-Wife police force had massive ammounts of opporotunity. so did the vampires, they should of been more than "the fat one in the pulp fiction suit and with a yakuza head tattoo" or names that nobody really remembered. but one thing i did like was the art. The murky water-color like affects were terrific, it added more to the atomosphere than just a really basic storyline. the only reason i would suggest this book at all is the art. it totally redeems itself in the end,
ps. oh its also overpriced i paid 17$ for it at B&N.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great horror story, Jan 19 2004

I'd flipped through this graphic novel at my friendly neighborhood comic shop once or twice, but I didn't pick it up as the art style wasn't one that so much appealed to me -- not that there was anything wrong with it, Templesmith's manic, disjointed artwork fits the horror story perfectly... it just didn't grab me.

But when a friend of mine talked me into reading Steve Niles' "Love Me Tenderloin: A Cal McDonald Mystery," I knew I'd have to start snapping up everything he's written. This was the first book I could find.

Set in the small, sheltered town of Barrow, Alaska, this story concerns a troupe of vampires who conclude that holding a "meeting" in a town so far north that the sun does not rise for 30 days each winter will be like a month in paradise. For the residents of Barrow, though, it's hell.

I liked "Love Me Tenderloin" for the smart, sarcastic sense of humor Niles brought to the supernatural. This book is on the opposite end of the specturm -- bleak and violent, but still with a strong, human core. It's a great read that will not disappoint any horror fan. I just can't wait for the Dark Days trade paperback (the sequel) OR the movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Making it more fun to Read., Jan 2 2004

First of all, if you haven't read any other reviews and know what the bad guys are, then let me help how to enjoy the book. When I first got this book, I though the bad guys were some monster you know, I didn't know what they were. They kept me predicting, until the End. The End made it obvious to me and I believe that is what made the book good. If you don't know what the baddies are, then get this book, start predicting and find a good ending!

3.0 out of 5 stars It ain't great..., Oct 4 2003
By
The Poe Toaster (Seattle, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 30 Days Of Night (Paperback)
It's decent, but not great. The artwork is excellent, the violence is magically delicious, but the story..... hmmmph. The story is truncated and limp. It's as if the creators wanted to hurry up and finish with this whole thing. I wanted to see a more detailed storyline of the vampires killing off the townspeople... but what we get instead is the vampires arrive in town, and the next page the townspeople are down to just a small group of survivors. It's like there's a HUGE chunk of the story missing from the middle. It's a decent book and, hesitantly, I dare say it is worth the price (especially if you get a used copy).... but don't open the book with high expectations or you'll close it with a feeling of disappointment.
