Hoota Beast ISO Razor Toy,
By
This review is from: Razor Wire Pubic Hair (Paperback)
First of all, if you're walking into this experience expecting the standard Victorian storytelling experience that is still prevalent to this day (y'know, person's name followed by their history and the setting described in infinite detail, to make the reader feel omnipotent) then you'll be sadly disappointed. This is a bizarro book, meaning, it follows the bizarro mode of operation. As with any bizarro book, remember: reality is for people who can't handle fiction. The story itself is a study of relationship dynamics between semi-human and even less semi-human androidish beings in a bleak future. The characters aren't as vibrant as in some of CM3's other work, but the sheer enormity of their unusual attributes more than makes them worth studying. I kind of guessed how it would end, but maybe that's because I'm a WMD privy sniffer. More than anything, I love strolling through CM3's art exhibit - his is the genius of an avant film maker who instead turns to painting, using words for oil and paper for canvas. Using words in this way will no doubt send dictionary-gropers running to the authorities, but for me it's a pleasure to see English turned into a subby tart. Some people have been disturbed by the "violence" and "sex" in this book, but I fail to see what the hubbub is about - the author doesn't go into obsessive detail in these areas, nor are the elements in question out of place. In fact, in a book about the violence of relationships how can you not have sex or violence, or the combination thereof? This seems to be the book where CM3 really hit his stride, and I'd recommend it as an introduction to his work for those unfamiliar with him. If you're into fast-paced books loaded with unusual visuals, this is for you. And now, if you'll excuse me, I aim to play a game or two of black spider before the night is through..

Just a toy!,

This is probably Carlton Mellick III's most erotic story. I won't bother going over the plot as it was explained in many other reviews in details. But I will say this, if you're relatively new to the bizarro genre, I suggest you wait before reading this one. It's quite experimental (even for bizarro) and unless you realy like hardcore erotic stories, you'll probably find it quite repulsing. But if that's your kind of thing, this story will fascinate you. CM3 has a unique imagination it shows with this one.

Great Book,
By Bradley (Portland, Oregon) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Razor Wire Pubic Hair (Paperback)
Carlton Mellick has a hell of an imagination. Although the book's setting is surreal and fantastical, his writing makes it seem real, as if it were existing in my own head. And his unique characters are a great extension of their environment. The sexual permeates the entire book, and unlike most authors who manage to make sex boring and bland, Carlton makes it highly entertaining.

Lovingly vicious in a daliesque landscape,

Wow! This is the second book I've read by CM3, and again he doesn't dissapoint. This story is genuinely one of the strangest things I've ever read and enjoyed. Where does CM3's imagination come from?-I don't want to know!!! It's dizzying to read this book.-So clearly written, as the images take shape, your head begins to spin. Shockingly brutal to say the least, tender, and probably not to everyone's taste. In my opinion CM3 is cutting his own path in writing, and I can't wait to see where it leads next. Great stuff, buy it, support a worthwhile author.

A Sexually-Charged Poetic Nightmare,
By Ron Mixen (Neverwhere) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Razor Wire Pubic Hair (Paperback)
This author really knows how to effect me. He made me laugh at his Douglas Adams on acid ideas in Satan Burger. He made me ashamed of myself for thoroughly enjoying The Baby Jesus Butt Plug. Then I read Razor Wire Pubic Hair, and he turned my world upside down. The only thing I can compare it to is maybe Naked Lunch or the Japanese film The Iron Man. Though it is more fun to read than Naked Lunch. It is more tangible and less chaotic. It is more like the film version of Naked Lunch. Very surreal, but you always know what is going on. This book is just brilliant. The language is just crazy enough to keep you interested. The illustrations are both grotesque and erotic. The chapters are brief and to the point. The plot is unpredictable and goes in the most unusual directions. The characters are absurd yet very real. I recommend this book to fans of Naked Lunch, Aeon Flux, A Clockwork Orange, Visitor Q, The Iron Man, Eraserhead, The Holy Mountain, or anything that is very strange yet very good. Give this book a try. This book and Satan Burger would be a good place to start with this author.

This book is great. CM3 is the most imaginative writer since Lethem and Vonnegut. Different, and absolutely thought provoking...made me want to dance into a vat of razorblades and butter!!! A true showing of Mr.Mellick's trademark style. Liked it alot.

sick and wonderful,

The only thing RWPH suffers from is its length. It's just too damn short! You'll love it no matter who you are, though. That's the thing with Carlton Mellick, whatever he writes is satisfying to anyone. Make sure and check out Satan Burger and Electric Jesus Corpse, his epics. Adios.

As good as a Grand Rapids sandwich,
By Timothy A Burkland (The Necrodesert) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Razor Wire Pubic Hair (Paperback)
The best part about Carlton Mellick III's writing is that it fully engrosses you into the world that he creates. You can see, smell, feel, and taste it. This book tastes about as good as the sandwich I had yesterday. It had roast beef, turkey, salami, bacon, american cheese, swiss cheese, cream cheese, lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, mayo, and italian dressing on it. It was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. I also read this book yesterday and it was one of the best books I've ever read. Its very sexual, which makes sense seeing as its all about sex. It makes you feel good. It makes you want to vomit. It makes you want to vomit on yourself while you feel good. The story is depressing, uplifting, suspenseful, intense, and sexual. It also contains a lot of amazing artwork. Just get it.

A dystopian future novel like no other!,
This review is from: Razor Wire Pubic Hair (Paperback)
I would compare this book to all of the great dystopian novels like 1984, Brave New World, The Handmaid's Tale, or the Terry Gilliam film Brazil. But in this future, sex is the oppressor. It is about a society where men no longer exist and so women create biologically engineered hermaphrodites for sexual pleasure and reproduction. I believe the motto of this society would be "life is cheap, only sex matters." A very disturbing yet intelligent novel about humanity's sick obsession with sex and what it might do to us someday. At least this is what I got out of this novel. It is also very strange and reminiscent of my favorite author, William Burroughs.

A Beautiful Nightmare,
By "satanelf" (Elgin, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Razor Wire Pubic Hair (Paperback)
Carlton Mellick is by far my favorite writer. To tell you the truth, I didn't even know I had a favorite author until I discovered him. All of his books are imaginative, interesting, and weird, but also funny and sexy. This one is my favorite. I don't know how to explain how excellent this book is. It left me speechless. It is like a beautiful nightmare set inside an H. R. Giger painting. Pure genius.
