This review is from: Marriage Fitness: 4 Steps To Building & Maintaining Phenomenal Love (Paperback)
I ordered this CD series from his website, and spent $100 on it... Not so bad for Therapy. But the book contains the same content, the CD is just Mort Fertel reading it. This is Real common sense advice that WILL work. It's SO SIMPLE, HELLO!!! Implementing these steps will revive a sagging marriage, and it is so simple, again! If you are tired and weary of your marriage, or argue all the time and you need to rekindle the fire these very easy steps will help. But like any exercise program you need to actually do it. You CAN turn a marriage around.

I think the main thing wrong with Fertel's approach is his assumption of a deep love and connection prior to marriage. People marry for different reasons. The young often marry because they're in 'lust' with each other; the older marry because they may fear 'missing the boat', people marry for comfort, security, to get away from controlling parents, in order to have children - because of social and religious pressures, etc. I do, however, respect a great deal of what he has to say. His approach isn't so much about making a marriage 'work' on a practical level - ie. two 'partners' working towards the goals of paying the bills and raising children - it's about a deep soulful connection where your mate becomes your best friend and most intimate confidant. This is great, but part of me then whispers, "in the old days deep love often existed between couples that never confided in each other or said 'I love you' or seemed very plugged in at all." I guess part of me experienced many 'light bulb' moments with this, but part of me thought 'wow, this guy is just asking too much of two egos if he expects our 'me' to become 'we' with such zeal. I think a lot of his advice, however, is doable and will obviously foster a greater emotional and physical intimacy. I'd say if you do 50% of what this book suggests, it will improve your marriage. If you did 100% of it, you'd probably lose too much of yourself, and be a little nausteating into the bargain!
