Perfectly Adequate Guide to Vienna,
By
This review is from: Frommer's Vienna Day By Day (Paperback)
Vienna is a fairly compact city in that the tourist can cover most of the central area on foot. Hence, a pocket guide of this size works very well here as the key facts for this city can be contained within a comparatively small book, whereas with a city like London or New York you would really only be scratching the surface. The book starts off with the obligatory list of must see experiences, which in this case number 14 - these are experiences, such as 'get lost in the maze at Schonbrunn Palace' rather than a dry list of sights. Itineraries for one, two and three days are then suggested. I would not disagree with the choice of content, although they did look rather ambitious to me. After three days of this sort of intense sightseeing you would need to go on holiday for a week to get over it! Most of the remainder of the book is divided into chapters on various 'Best Of' categories. Best of Special Interest Tours, Neighbourhood Walks, Shopping, The Best Outdoors, Dining, Night Life, Entertainment and Lodging are considered. Finally there is a chapter which gives hints to the traveller and which covers a wide range of subjects from how to get there to history of the city. More usually guide books of this type split the area covered into segments and then list the highlights within that area. Using the rather different layout described above has both advantages and disadvantages in that if, for example, music is your interest, it is easy to key into this in the Best of Special Interest Tours and find what will interest you. However, if you are in a particular area and want to see the important sights in that area, you rather have to jump around the book to find them. Overall this is a guide which is perfectly adequate for a visit to Vienna. A useful addition is that the book comes with a map of the central area in a plastic wallet at the back, on which many of the tourist attractions are marked.
