The definitive scholarly compilation on zombology
Finally, a man who understands the all-too-real threat of the living dead and who posesses the eloquence to present it convincingly! Max Brooks has produced a small wonder of a book in the Zombie Survival Guide, a book which provides the average American reader (through hands-on experience, published scientific research and historical accounts) with a comprehensive guide...

Got a Little Tiring
Although initially I had great enthusiasm for the book, after I got half way through it I became increasingly bored. Though some of the author's ideas were great, the book could have been condenced into a hundred and fifty pages and I found myself wondering if my time could have been better spend reading a zombie novel instead.

The definitive scholarly compilation on zombology, Avril 23 2004
Finally, a man who understands the all-too-real threat of the living dead and who posesses the eloquence to present it convincingly! Max Brooks has produced a small wonder of a book in the Zombie Survival Guide, a book which provides the average American reader (through hands-on experience, published scientific research and historical accounts) with a comprehensive guide to surviving multiple levels of zombie infestation. Stripping away popular zombie myths, Brooks cuts through the morass of media misinformation with a book based firmly in the terrible reality of the undead. Easy-to-follow chapters on recommended weaponry, small-unit tactics and defensive fortification provide an easy entrance into the frightening world of the undead for the novice zombologist, while seasoned veterans will appreciate the elaborate instructions on how to survive the dreaded "Class 4" infestation. With a balanced mix of the practical, the historical and the scientific, this book has something for everyone. If you buy only one book on zombology, make it this one.

Excellent book, a MUST READ for fans of Romero zombie lore!!, Mars 16 2004
I guess the only reason this book is published and shelved in the "humor" category is because pretty much nobody believes that zombies are real. But other than that, it's not a very humorous book...... it mostly deals with horror, violence and cannibalism. It's basically like watching a Romero zombie flim in book form.I guess one of the reasons everyone thinks it's a humor book is because the author is a SNL staff writer and the son of Mel Brooks. Well, I think maybe there are assumptions being made because this book doesn't read like something that was written to make people laugh.... it reads like something that someone wrote knowing no one would believe most of what's in it but not caring in the least. I don't agree that it's a parody or a book of humor or tounge in cheek or any of that..... I think that Max Brooks wants to believe that zombies can exist and has written this book for the rest of us who also want to believe that it's not just horror fiction. Hey.... Mulder wanted to believe in UFO's, and there are those of us who want to believe in all kinds of things. There are a lot of people out there who want to believe that zombies can exist because they want to pit their skills against them.... same reason people go ghost hunting and the minute some place is rumored to be haunted you have 3,000 tourists there every year. Those of you out there who want to think that the whole zombie business is the stuff of bad Z-grade horror flicks and nothing more, that's why this book is published under "humor." You can laugh at this book and take it as a parody.... whatever works for you. Those of you who enjoy Romero flicks, the new Dawn of the Dead movie starring Ving Rhames, the Resident Evil films, etc., and wonder what you would do if a zombie virus outbreak actually did occur, this book is for you......and as one of your fellow zombie lore enthusiasts I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Great book, Mars 7 2007
This book was really well done, it makes you think that there actually is a potential for a "zombie attack". It lists the types of attack and reactions that you can expect from zombies, as well as various hunting and disposal methods for various terrain types.

Simplistic, Jui 11 2009
This was a rather entertaining read, as I suspect it was intended. I have no illusions that the Zombie threat and his examples of infestations are fiction. But his information as to what is needed to survive and how to survive are incredibly simplistic. Examples of what to do never provide detailed advice or methodology to follow. Items needed for survival are simplistically described. Again, a fun book to read but would it have been better served with more detail as this, indirectly, could also have served as a guide to survival for a more realistic emergency. Like alien invasion!

A great read!, Jui 5 2009
Max Brooks has created a very creative and entertaining guide to "what if there was a zombie infestation". Despite the fact it is fictional, the book sounds absolutely serious and really puts you into the situation and all the things you would have to do to survive. I highly recommend it!

Funny in places, crappy in others, Mars 22 2009
As with World War Z, Max Brook uses this book to get off on his macho Red Dawn knowledge of combat. Which means- his ideas are terrible. Some of the scenarios are interesting, but that's because of the zombies rather than his writing. His ideas are badly flawed, ignore a lot of psychology, and make no tactical sense. Not once does he seriously talk about wearing thick clothes or pads as a defense. That'd stop 99% of all zombie attacks. And a car is a much better weapon then a machete or .22. I know that zombies are silly fiction, but if he wants to pretend at being serious on the subject, he should've thought a little harder about it first.

Disappointed, Janv. 19 2009
This book is a waste of time and money. I thought this would be an entertaining read but boy was I wrong. It reads like a "real" survival guide. I did not crack a laugh once. It was so dry. I'm sure there are people out there who think this is a great book but then again I'm sure there are people out there who believe in Zombies too.

The book you want to be seen reading on the subway..., Nov. 4 2006
The clever thing about this book is that it pretends to be serious about a fictional topic. The "chronology of zombie attacks" in the appendix is a masterful piece of fake documentary.
The creepiest thing about this book is that you could do a Find/Replace on zombies and replace it with (maligned social/ethnic group of choice) and the book would still mostly make sense, but then read like a crazed Get-Out-Of-Dodge redneck survival manual. An interesting reminder that the popularity of zombie media stems from our latent fears about what our world has really become.
