This book is why I started reading comics 35 years ago!! It has everything, heroes, villains, spies, ghosts, monsters etc. The writing is wonderful and the artwork outstanding. I wonder how DC got permission for Mr. Ellis and Mr. Cassaday to use the likenesses of so many characters from other companies. If you have been reading comics as long as I have the allusions to other characters are incredibly obvious. To see them twisted and used as the characters Mr. Ellis has created was somewhat uncomfortable but still quite refreshing. Thank you Mr. Ellis and Mr. Cassaday.

Warren Ellis at his best playing homage to the pop icons of the 20th century. John Cassaday's work on this is still a bit rough. I find his art in the book is not as polished as say... Astonishing X-Men? But it's still a sight to behold.

Only knocking it for one star due to lack of extras. I would have loved to see more, like an annotations page (like in Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier) just to know what pop-culture reference Ellis is referring to.

Absolute Planetary contains the first twelve issues of DC/Wildstorm's Planetary. This title has been a beloved favourite of mine for years. The storyline has been brought to a conclusion after 27 issues, and I'm disappointed that Elijah Snow, Jakita Wagner, and the Drummer will no longer be preserving and protecting Planetary's strange and wonderful world.

Warren Ellis and John Cassaday have created an imaginative and intelligent work that deserved better treatment than it received from DC. Hopefully all of Planetary will soon be published in collected editions and Absolute Planetary 2 is in the works. Although Absolute Planetary is beautifully issued in an oversized slip-cased format there are no additional materials (such as artwork and sketches, essays, or annotations/footnotes) that are often included in other Absolute editions.

It's about time that DC releases a new printing of Absolute Planetary (so that fans can afford to purchase a copy without having to sell a kidney to pay for it) and make all of this title's other editions available to a loyal and eager readership.

Attention: I'm very pleased to report that DC/Wildstorm is reprinting Absolute Planetary Book One at a reasonable price so fans can keep both kidneys. The new printing will be available around July 2010. Absolute Planetary Book Two (containing issues 13-27) will be published sometime in the summer of 2010 and will bring the series to an end.
